If Windows 11 Pro is installed but the device is registered with a Windows 11 Home license, activation fails because the installed edition must match the license.
Use one of these supported paths:
- Check the installed edition
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Confirm whether the device is running Windows 11 Pro or Windows 11 Home.
- If the device has a valid Windows 11 Pro product key
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
- Enter the valid Windows 11 Pro key.
- If the key is valid, Windows starts an in-place edition upgrade or activation.
- If the device only has a digital license for Windows 11 Home
- Windows 11 Pro will not activate with that Home license.
- The supported fix is to install Windows 11 Home. During setup, the product key step can be skipped if there is already a digital license, and Windows activates automatically after installation completes.
- If a significant hardware change was made
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot and run the Activation troubleshooter.
- This requires an internet connection and administrator access.
- If the troubleshooter cannot resolve it after hardware changes, contact support.
- If the motherboard was replaced by the OEM or repair center
- The PC might reactivate automatically.
- If it does not, enter the 25-character key from the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) in Settings > System > Activation > Change product key.
Important:
- A Home license does not activate Pro.
- Installing Pro on a device previously activated for Home requires a valid Pro product key.
- Moving from Pro back to Home requires installing Windows 11 Home.
