    Hello Aurelia Crowder,

Could you please confirm whether you can still contact the Global Administrator of the business that originally created your account?

A standard user account cannot be changed into an administrator account by the user. An existing Global Administrator must assign the appropriate administrator role through the Microsoft 365 admin center. By default, a newly created user has standard user permissions unless an administrator assigns an admin role.

If the original business still manages the Microsoft 365 tenant, please contact its Global Administrator and request one of the following:

    • If you want to continue using the existing tenant, ask the Global Administrator to assign the appropriate administrator role to your account.
    • If you want to create and manage your own Microsoft 365 tenant, ask the Global Administrator to remove your domain from the existing tenant.

If you cannot contact any Global Administrator of the existing tenant, you will need to contact Microsoft Support. An authorized support team will need to verify your identity and domain ownership before reviewing the available options for administrator access or domain recovery.

To help me understand your situation and provide more specific guidance, could you please confirm whether you want to remain in the current tenant or create a separate tenant?

Please do not share the complete domain, account credentials, billing details, or other sensitive information publicly.

    Kind regards,

If the domain is creating an unmanaged Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Entra account that was set up through self-service sign-up, the supported way to gain admin access is an internal admin takeover.

    Steps:

    1. Create a user context for that domain.
      • Go to the Power BI site and select Start Free.
      • Sign up with an account that uses the domain name, for example ******@contoso.com.
      • If the account already exists, sign in with its current password.
      • Check email and enter the verification code.
    2. Create the account used for takeover.
      • After verification, complete the page to create the username and password.
      • Select Start.
    3. Start the admin takeover wizard.
      • Open the admin center icon from the left navigation pane, or go to https://admin.cloud.microsoft.
      • This redirects to the admin takeover wizard.
    4. Verify domain ownership.
      • Select Next.
      • Add the TXT record provided by the wizard at the domain registrar.
      • When the TXT record is verified, admin access is granted.
    5. Finish takeover.
      • On You're now the admin, select Go to the admin center.
      • This provides the admin privileges needed to manage users, groups, subscriptions, and domains.

If the goal is specifically to remove the domain from the other unmanaged account and add it to a managed account, that can be done after becoming admin of the unmanaged account.

If the account is already a managed business tenant and the original admin is unavailable, the context only supports that account recovery or reassignment may require Microsoft’s Data Protection team.
