SQL Server patching and Windows Server security patching

Could you please confirm whether SQL Server patching and Windows Server security patching can be performed during the same maintenance window, followed by a single reboot? Is this the recommended approach?

    Yes it possible before the activity please follow below instructions.

    1. Take backups and verify recovery options.
    2. Apply Windows Server security updates.
    3. Apply SQL Server Cumulative Update (CU) or security update.
    4. Verify that all installations completed successfully.
    5. Perform one reboot.
    6. Validate:
      • SQL Server services start correctly.
      • SQL Agent jobs are running.
      • Application connectivity is healthy.
      • Windows updates show as successfully installed.

    I see no reason why it would not be possible, but one correct to Senthil's post: You need to apply the SQL Server CU/GDR before applying the Windows patches. The reason for this is that you cannot apply SQL Server patches with a pending reboot.

    I've done this many times with WSUS and approving the SQL CU at the same time the monthly Patch Tuesday CU and .NET CU is released. All 3 download and install and there's only 1 restart.
