If the Surface camera works but Windows Hello doesn’t, I’d check the Windows Hello settings and make sure the IR camera/biometric driver is installed and up to date. Removing and setting up Face Recognition again can also help. If it still fails, check Device Manager for any errors under the camera or biometric devices.

    Hi Edwardo Miranda,

Thanks for the details. Since your regular front camera is working but Windows Hello says it can’t find a compatible camera, I’d like to narrow down whether Windows is detecting the separate camera hardware used for facial recognition.

Could you let me know the exact Surface Pro model you have and whether Windows Hello Face worked on this device before? If it did, do you remember whether the problem started after a Windows update, reset or any other change?

I’d also suggest opening Device Manager > Cameras and checking which camera devices are listed there. Please let me know their names and whether any of them have a yellow warning symbol. There’s no need to uninstall anything at this point.

If your Surface model supports Windows Hello Face but its facial-recognition camera isn’t being detected even after the updates and troubleshooting already suggested in the AI Answer, that information will help determine whether this is a driver/detection issue or whether the Windows Hello camera itself may need further attention.

If the front camera works in apps but Windows Hello sign-in does not, the most common causes are that the device does not support Windows Hello Face, Windows Hello needs to be set up again, or the camera/firmware needs troubleshooting.

    1. Sign in with a PIN or password, then set up Windows Hello again.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
      • If facial recognition is available, set it up again.
      • If Windows Hello sometimes recognizes the face but fails often, go to Facial recognition (Windows Hello) and select Improve recognition.
    2. Confirm the Surface model supports Windows Hello facial recognition.
      • Surface Laptop 13-inch 1st Edition and all Surface Laptop Go models do not support facial recognition.
      • Those models use Windows Hello fingerprint recognition instead.
    3. Update Surface drivers and firmware.
      • Open the Surface app.
      • Expand Help & support.
      • If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them.
    4. Run the camera troubleshooter.
      • Open the automated camera troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It runs diagnostics and takes the correct steps to fix most camera issues.
    5. Check camera privacy settings.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
      • Make sure Camera access and Let apps access your camera are both On.
    6. If Windows Hello says it cannot find a compatible camera, the regular front camera may still work for apps, but Windows Hello Face requires compatible facial-recognition hardware. If the device supports Windows Hello Face, make sure it is fully updated and run the Windows Hello troubleshooter.
    7. If the camera itself is unstable, try Surface camera troubleshooting:
      • Force a restart: Start > Power > Shut down, wait a moment, then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds until the logo screen appears again.
      • If needed, remove and reinstall the camera driver in Device Manager under Cameras.
      • Warning: Do not uninstall camera drivers on Surface Pro X. On that device, restoring them requires a full system reset.

If the issue continues after these steps, use the Surface app or Get Help for technical support. For work or school devices, contact the organization’s IT helpdesk or admin.
