A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
On iPad, Office apps normally save changes automatically to the cloud location chosen for the file, including while offline. If Excel has not saved for days, focus on where the file is stored and whether AutoSave is actually available for that file.
- Check where the workbook is saved. AutoSave works when the file is saved to OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online. If the file is saved locally or in another location, AutoSave is disabled.
- In Excel, open the file from the app’s File menu. For AutoSave to activate, the file must be opened from File within Excel, then selected from the online location.
- Check common reasons AutoSave is disabled.
AutoSave can be unavailable if:
- the file is in an older format such as .xls
- the file is embedded inside another Office file
- the presentation/file is in a mode that disables AutoSave
- OneDrive sync is paused
- the workbook uses Excel features not supported by AutoSave
- If the file is in Excel format but still will not save, try saving a copy. In the app, use File > Save As and save the workbook to a different cloud location or with a new name. This helps if the current file or save target is the problem.
- If Excel shows save-related failures, check for file access issues. Excel save problems can happen when permissions are missing, the destination connection fails, or the save process is interrupted. Saving to an alternative location is a supported workaround.
- If the issue is only on the iPad app, test whether it is app-specific.
- Create a new blank workbook and enter test data.
- Try saving and exiting.
- If only one workbook fails, the issue is likely with that file.
- Reset the Excel app’s cloud settings. On iPad, go to Settings > Excel > Reset, then select Reset Cloud Settings. Restart Excel afterward.
- If Excel freezes when saving or exiting, try basic app recovery steps.
- Sign out of Excel.
- Force-close Excel.
- Reopen it and sign in again.
- If the problem continues, uninstall and reinstall Excel.
- Check iPad storage. Low device storage can prevent apps from saving correctly. Check Settings > General > iPad Storage.
- If collaboration is involved, confirm the file is not read-only. Read-only files cannot save edits.
