I have an hp laptop 17t-cn000, windows 11 home 26H2, which I've unsuccessfully tried to install 26220.9492 update multiple times over the past 3 days. It continuously fails at FIRST_BOOT, then rolls back to previous build. Most recent setuperr.log shows:

For a rollback during setup, the supported first-pass fixes are the same driver and background-process checks used for Windows upgrade failures.

    1. Back up important data first. Microsoft recommends a robust backup and recovery plan before upgrading.
    2. Disconnect nonessential hardware: remove external storage, docks, and other peripherals. Leave only keyboard, mouse, and display connected.
    3. Temporarily uninstall third-party antivirus or security software, then retry the update. These can interfere with setup and rollback.
    4. Run Windows Update repeatedly until no important updates, hardware updates, or driver updates remain.
    5. Update third-party drivers from the device or component manufacturer sites, especially chipset, storage, graphics, and firmware-related drivers.
    6. Check Device Manager:
      • Open devmgmt.msc
      • Look for devices with a yellow exclamation mark
      • For each affected device, use Update Driver Software or Uninstall
      • Retry the update after all device errors are cleared
    7. Review Event Viewer system logs for driver or hardware-related events around the failed install time and correct any issue found.
    8. Update BIOS/firmware from HP if a newer version is available for the laptop model.
    9. If background software is interfering, perform a clean boot and retry the update. This is specifically recommended when setup is terminated by another background process.
    10. If Windows Update components may be stuck, reset the update cache from an elevated Command Prompt:
    net stop bits
    net stop wuauserv
    ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
    ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
    net start bits
    net start wuauserv

Then restart the PC and try the update again.

    1. Check the system drive for file-system errors from an elevated Command Prompt:
    chkdsk /f C:

    A restart will be required.

    1. If the failure persists, check whether the device has enough free space. For 0xC1900101-class upgrade failures, Microsoft lists at least 16 GB free for 32-bit OS or 20 GB for 64-bit OS.

    Notes on risk:

    • Renaming SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 requires administrator rights and is an advanced troubleshooting step.
    • chkdsk /f schedules disk repair and requires a restart.
    • BIOS updates should be done carefully because interruption can cause system problems.

The log lines shown point most strongly to setup/migration interference from drivers, services, or background software, so the highest-value path is: disconnect peripherals, remove third-party security software, update drivers/BIOS, clear Device Manager errors, then retry in a clean boot state.
