Microsoft Dev Box: Intermittent Connection Failures — Assistance Needed

Problem description

I am experiencing random connection issues with my Microsoft Dev Box. The problem manifests as intermittent failures when trying to connect, with error messages such as "error occurred accessing resource," "error connecting to the gateway," and "there are currently no available resources." The Dev Box is in a running state, but the connection problems persist unpredictably.

Environment

The affected service is Microsoft Dev Box, involving multiple Dev Boxes in use. The specific region, pool, SKU, network connection details, or resource identifiers are not specified in the case information.

What I've already tried

I have attempted troubleshooting by running the 'Troubleshoot & repair' feature on affected dev boxes, but it does not resolve the issue and does not generate any diagnostic files. Additionally, I have ensured that the Windows App client and the client's operating system are fully up to date. The Dev Boxes are reported to be in a running state, and the network connection appears healthy.

Current status

Currently, the connection failures are intermittent and affect multiple Dev Boxes without a clear pattern. The issue seems related to shared connectivity or environment-wide service state rather than a single machine problem. I am seeking guidance on further troubleshooting steps or configuration changes to resolve these connectivity issues.

Azure Virtual Desktop

    Hi @ea_thackepa

Those three errors ("no available resources", "error connecting to the gateway", "error accessing resource") come from the AVD gateway and broker layer, not from the dev box VMs. That's why Troubleshoot & Repair does nothing for you: it only checks VM power status, domain join, listener readiness and guest OS. And multiple boxes failing together confirms the problem is in the shared path between your clients and the AVD control plane.

    Isolate it in this order:

    1. Connect through the browser at devbox.microsoft.com, and separately from a phone hotspot. If the hotspot connection is stable, it's your corporate network: proxy, TLS inspection, firewall or DNS intermittently interfering with the *.wvd.microsoft.com gateway endpoints. Allowlist the AVD FQDNs, exclude them from TLS inspection, and as a test turn off UDP in Windows App settings to rule out RDP Shortpath.
    2. If your dev boxes use a customer-managed network connection (your own VNet), have the admin go to Dev center > Network connections and run the health check. The dev box agent needs continuous outbound access to the AVD control plane, and an NSG, UDR or firewall dropping that traffic intermittently produces exactly "no available resources".
    3. Check Azure Service Health for Dev Box and Azure Virtual Desktop in your region.
    4. Get real diagnostics: click "Details" on the error in Windows App and copy the Activity ID, then Settings > Diagnostics to export logs. Admins can also enable diagnostic settings on the dev center to Log Analytics to see connection failures across all boxes. Open a support ticket with those Activity IDs, that's what support correlates.

One thing to know: Dev Box is now in maintenance mode with no new features, and Microsoft points to Windows 365 as the path forward. If this keeps recurring, factor that into your planning.
