A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Excel does not provide a one-click command to split one worksheet into multiple separate files automatically, but a similar result can be achieved by saving the sheet as its own workbook or exporting it.
If the goal is to turn the current sheet into its own Excel file:
- Right-click the worksheet tab at the bottom.
- Select Move or Copy.
- In Move selected sheets to book, choose (new book).
- If the original sheet must remain in the current workbook, check Create a copy.
- Select OK.
- In the new workbook that opens, select File > Save and save it as a separate file.
If the goal is to split the sheet’s data into separate text/CSV files (one per sheet, after you’ve moved or copied data to separate sheets):
- Activate the worksheet to export.
- Go to File > Save As.
- Select Browse and choose a location.
- In Save as type, choose a text format such as Text (Tab delimited) or CSV (Comma delimited).
- Select Save.
- When prompted that only the current worksheet will be saved, select OK.
- Repeat for each worksheet that should become its own text/CSV file.
To split data within a single sheet into multiple files (for example, by region or category), data must first be separated into different worksheets (manually, with formulas/filters, or with automation such as VBA or Power Automate), and then each worksheet can be saved or exported using the methods above.
