The new Insider Advanced Options settings for the Beta experience are confusing

Question

The new Insider Advanced Options settings for the Beta experience are confusing

Bert22306 150

In spite of Microsoft's claim that they simplified the Windows Insider program, the extra settings now available are ambiguous, to me at least.

I go so settings > system > windows update > windows insider program.

It is now correctly set to Beta, which is the channel I belonged to before the Insider Program change a couple of Fridays ago. Cool.

Except that now, there's a new "advanced options" pulldown. I click on that and it gives more settings.

The first new set of options consists of 25H2, 26H1, or "future platforms." Choosing 26H1 supposedly gives you changes targeting the 26H1 build, even though that build technically is limited to Android or other such OS. So I clicked on that.

Not sure what "future platforms" refers to, as the Beta channel I thought was dedicated to Windows new developments, not other platforms. But whatever.

Next under that, there's a switch "show release preview."

??? As opposed to what? Aren't all Insider channels supposed to "show release preview"? If you do not turn that switch on, then what are you seeing? The public build? Or does that switch mean that I'm seeing the same version of Windows as the Release Preview Channel?

Confused. Anyone have an idea what Microsoft has in mind here? Thanks!!

The new options reflect Microsoft’s move to split Insider content by both channel and target release/platform, not just by channel.

From the context provided:

Channels vs. “26H1” / “Future platforms”
- Channels (Beta, Experimental, Experimental (26H1), etc.) describe how early and how stable the builds are.
- Labels like 25H2, 26H1, and Future platforms describe what product milestone or hardware/platform the builds are targeting.
- For example, there are dedicated tracks such as Experimental (26H1) and Experimental (Future Platforms) that “deliver builds scoped to specific product milestones or hardware targets.” In Beta, the new Advanced options are exposing a similar concept:
  - 25H2: content aligned with the 25H2 Windows release.
  - 26H1: content aligned with the 26H1 milestone (even if that milestone is also used for other device types).
  - Future platforms: content aimed at newer or more experimental hardware/OS targets beyond the current named milestones.
So choosing 26H1 in Beta means: “Stay in the Beta channel, but get Beta-quality builds that are aligned with the 26H1 product line,” rather than changing to a different channel.
“Show release preview” toggle
The context describes the channels as follows:
- Beta Channel: “more stable builds for users who want to preview upcoming features closer to release.”
- Release Preview Channel: a separate channel that is closest to what will ship broadly.
The “Show release preview” switch in the Beta experience is there to optionally surface Release Preview–aligned builds while remaining in the Beta experience UI. When enabled, it allows seeing or receiving builds that correspond to what the Release Preview track is getting for the same milestone, without having to move the device to the dedicated Release Preview channel entry in Settings. In other words:
- Off: Only see Beta builds for the selected milestone (25H2, 26H1, or Future platforms).
- On: Also see builds that match what the Release Preview track is getting for that milestone, effectively letting Beta users preview the “almost final” builds for that same line.

This is why the UI talks about both the Beta channel and additional choices like 26H1 and Show release preview: the first sets the channel, the others refine which milestone/platform and how close to final the builds should be.

Hi Bert,

Blogs are posted for a reason and it

helps to read them.

Crazycats, the point of my message is that blog was muddled when it first came out, and now the rubber is meeting the road.

The blog says this, which sounds contradictory or at least ambiguous:

Beta is a refresh of the previous Beta Channel and previews what we plan to ship in the coming weeks. The big change: we’re ending gradual feature rollouts in Beta. When we announce a feature in a Beta update and you take that update, you will have that feature.

Cool. A welcome update. Then it says,

For most Insiders, picking the Beta or Experimental channel will be all you need to get set up, but for those who want to go further, we are adding an advanced option to pick your Windows core version compatible with your hardware. Most users will see these options as 25H2 or 26H1 builds.

So here I am, Beta channel, and I pick 26H1. Theoretically I should see changes that 26H1 introduces, if they're compatible with my hardware. I guess. Given that 26H1 is an option I can select. It's still unclear, right?

Then it says this:

The Experimental channel will also contain a further Future Platforms option which is our earliest preview build for Windows and is not aligned to a retail version of Windows.

What? I'm in the Beta channel, and Advanced Options is allowing me to select this "future platforms" anyway? And we're supposed to understand this? Is that setting inactive, for Beta channel members? If so, why is it not greyed out? Or at the very least, why does the blog not explain that most of these advanced options won't work for your Insider channel, assuming they don't?

And then finally,

Release Preview will continue to be an advanced option aimed at commercial customers and Insiders who want early access to production builds in the days leading up to broad release. To select Release Preview, you will need to enable it in the ‘Advanced Options’ but the content remains unchanged.

How does that not conflict with everything I clicked previously? Will I be seeing Beta channel 26H1, or will I be seeing Release Preview channels changes?

This is very confusing. If Advanced Options can be selected but have no effect, someone at Microsoft should at least make that much clear.

Whoa, is that AI response ever confusing, eh?

The explanation seems to say that by choosing 26H1 and also "release preview," I'm seeing simultaneously whatever the newest 26H1 changes are and the much more conservative changes of the Release Preview channel.

How is that not contradictory?

Bert,

You are making yourself confused.

Beta is 26220

Dev/Experimental is 25H2 - 26300

Canary/Experimental is 26H1 - 28020

Canary/Future is 295xx

Release Preview is 26100 or 26200.
