All Screenshots come out washed.

This is Windows 11, Samsung Galaxy Notebook.

Using the already installed Snipping Tool, I'm unable to take screenshots with their proper color. I'm guessing it's an HDR issue, since when I turned it on, the washed out colors looked the exact same as when I take a screenshot.

Here is what a color supposed to look like:

And here's what the screenshot turns it into:

User's image

HDR was toggled on and off and it hasn't fixed the issue.

HDR color correction was turn on for the Snipping Tool and it hasn't fixed the issue, nor turning it off when I do not have HDR on.

I tried to use auto color management, and it made things worse as everything was washed out, and the snipping tool still didn't work.

EDIT: I've tried to use other screenshot tools and they all have the same problem, so I guess it isn't just the snipping tool?

I need a solution to make screenshots from being washed out.

    Hi Rina Dragon,

Thank you for raising this issue. I understand how frustrating it can be when screenshots don’t reflect the actual on-screen colors.

To start, I’d recommend following the steps provided by Q&A Assist above, as they cover the common causes related to HDR configuration and graphics drivers. Please go through those suggestions first and let me know the outcome.

Additionally, could you help clarify a bit more about the behavior?

    • Did this issue occur from the very beginning (first setup of the device) or did it start recently?
    • If it started recently, do you recall any changes before it began (for example Windows Update, driver update or display setting changes)?

This information will help us narrow down whether it’s a configuration issue or something that changed in the system.

Please keep me updated with your findings after trying the suggested steps. I’ll be here to assist further.

On HDR-capable Windows 11 devices, washed-out colors and incorrect screenshots are usually caused by HDR/color pipeline issues or incorrect color profiles.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Update graphics drivers
      1. Open Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates.
      2. If the device manufacturer provides a graphics driver, install the latest version from their support site.
      3. Reboot and test Snipping Tool again.
    2. Check HDR and connection settings
      1. Go to Settings > System > Display.
      2. If using an external HDR display via HDMI and it supports DisplayPort, switch to DisplayPort instead. Some HDMI paths do not handle HDR and color correctly.
      3. If HDMI must be used:
        • Go to Advanced display and try reducing the refresh rate to 30 Hz (if available), then test screenshots.
        • If that does not help, open Display adapter properties > List All Modes and select 1920 by 1080, 60 Hertz, then test again.
    3. Fix general color issues on HDR laptops
      • On HDR-capable laptops, HDR can be turned off on battery and re-enabled on AC, which may leave colors under- or over-saturated after restarts.
      • Plug in the laptop, restart, then ensure HDR is configured as desired in Settings > System > Display > HDR before testing screenshots.
    4. Calibrate HDR properly (if HDR is required)
      1. Install and open the Windows HDR Calibration app.
      2. Ensure HDR is On in Settings > System > Display > HDR.
      3. Run the app full-screen on the HDR display and follow the three test patterns, moving each slider until the pattern disappears.
      4. On the saturation screen, adjust the slider until SDR and HDR content look correct (not washed out) and save the calibration.
      5. After calibration, test Snipping Tool again.

If screenshots still appear washed out after these steps, keep HDR off for normal desktop use and only enable it when needed for HDR video/games; this avoids the color pipeline issues that affect SDR screenshots on some HDR displays.
