Using a generic key only upgrades the edition from Home to Pro; it does not provide a valid license. After the upgrade, Windows will show as “inactive” until a genuine Pro license is applied and successfully activated.
Do the following based on how Windows Pro was obtained:
- If a Pro product key was purchased (retail key, OEM card, etc.)
- Select Start > Settings.
- For Windows 11: go to System > Activation. For Windows 10: go to Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter the 25‑character Windows Pro product key that was purchased.
- Select Next and complete activation.
- If the Pro upgrade was bought from the Microsoft Store on this device
- The license is a digital license linked to the Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Make sure the device is connected to the internet and signed in with that same Microsoft account.
- Restart the PC (use Restart, not Shut down) so Windows can complete the edition upgrade and attempt automatic activation.
- If it still shows as inactive, open Settings > System/Update & Security > Activation and run the Troubleshoot option if available.
- If activation shows a specific error code
- Check the error against the activation error guidance:
- Errors like 0xC004C003, 0xC004F034, 0xC004C008, 0xC004C770, 0x803FA071, 0xC004F00F, 0xC004F211, 0xC004F213, or 0xC004F212 indicate issues such as an invalid key, key already used on another device, edition mismatch, or hardware change.
- For those cases, follow the steps in the error description (for example, entering a key that matches the installed edition, purchasing a new key from the Microsoft Store, or using the Activation Troubleshooter and “reactivate after a hardware change” if applicable).
- Check the error against the activation error guidance:
If there is no valid Pro license (product key or digital license) associated with the device or account, Windows Pro cannot be activated; a genuine Pro license must be purchased and then applied via Change product key or the Microsoft Store.
