Windows 11 Notepad spellcheck stops working at random

The spellchecker in Windows 11 Notepad stops working at random. This seems to affect entire pages. It neither highlights spelling mistakes nor corrects them. It is still turned on in the Notepad settings and Time & Language / Typing.

Norah-L, thank you for your answer. There weren't any updates available for Notepad so I tried Advanced Options > Repair, which seems to have worked. I'll leave it for a while and see if the problem reappears.

A new .txt file, another Windows text field, and a second Windows user account will distinguish a document-specific problem from a Notepad-wide, language-service, or profile-specific failure before app recovery is attempted.

    1. Isolate the scope

Save any unsaved Notepad tabs first, then run these tests while spellcheck is failing:

    1. Test a new plain-text document
      • Open a new Notepad tab.
      • Save it as SpellTest.txt.
      • Enter several obvious misspellings.
      • If this works, copy the affected page into the new file as plain text and test again.
      • Record the original extension and whether the content contains code, URLs, Markdown, or unusual formatting. Microsoft’s documentation does not specify that Notepad spellcheck is enabled or disabled per document or extension, so saving as .txt is a diagnostic/workaround rather than an established fix.
    2. Test outside Notepad
      • Enter misspelled text in another Windows app or Settings text field that offers Windows spellchecking.
      • If spellcheck also fails there, the problem is broader than Notepad and points toward the Windows language/spelling components.
    3. Check the active input language
      • Press Windows+Space and select the language matching the text.
      • Go to Settings → Time & language → Language & region → your language → Language options.
      • Confirm Basic typing (wording can vary by build) is installed. Windows identifies the language “Basics” component as providing functionality such as spellchecking.^1^
      • This is separate from the spellcheck switches you already confirmed under Time & language → Typing.
    4. Test another local Windows account
      • Create or use another local account, sign in, and repeat the .txt test.
      • If spellcheck works there, the failure is limited to the original profile’s language or spelling data. Testing a separate account is also the documented diagnostic used to distinguish profile-specific Windows spellcheck problems.^2^

    2. Update and restart

If the new .txt file also fails:

    1. Open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates and install any Notepad update.
    2. Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates and install available updates.
    3. Restart the PC—not just Notepad—and test again.

Microsoft’s Store-app recovery sequence recommends updating Windows and Store apps before repair, reset, or reinstallation.^3^

    3. Repair, reset, then reinstall Notepad

If the problem remains in Notepad but not in other Windows apps:

    1. Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
    2. Find Notepad, select … → Advanced options.
    3. Select Repair, then reopen Notepad and test.
    4. If Repair fails, save all open text first and select Reset.

Reset can remove Notepad’s app data and preferences, so preserve unsaved tabs and documents first. Repair is designed to fix an app without reinstalling it; Reset is the next option when Repair does not work.^4^

If Advanced options, Repair, or Reset is unavailable—or Reset does not help:

    1. Uninstall Notepad from Settings → Apps → Installed apps if the option is present.
    2. Open Microsoft Store → Library.
    3. Locate Notepad and select Install.

The Microsoft Store troubleshooting sequence lists reinstallation after update, repair, and reset.^3^

    4. Report a reproducible failure

If the issue persists after updating and repairing—or it reproduces only with particular content—press Windows+F and file feedback under Apps → Notepad. Microsoft designates that Feedback Hub category for Notepad reports.^5^

    Include:

    • Windows version and OS build from Settings → System → About
    • Notepad version from Notepad → Settings
    • Active input language
    • Original file extension and a minimal sample
    • Whether a new .txt file fails
    • Whether another Windows app fails
    • Whether another Windows user account is affected
    • Exact steps that make spellcheck stop

    Hello Steven Cook,

Since spell-check remains enabled but stops working for an entire page, this is more likely a temporary problem with Notepad or its saved app data than a disabled setting. It could also happen if the Windows language and spelling components are not loading correctly.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

    • First, update Notepad from Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates, then restart the computer.
    • If it happens again, save your text and close every Notepad window. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Notepad > Advanced options, select Terminate, and then Repair. If Repair does not help, use Reset but save any unsaved Notepad tabs first.
    • Also check Settings > Time & language > Language & region. Select the three dots beside your typing language, open Language options, and make sure Basic typing is installed. Your keyboard language should match the language used in the document.

If the issue continues after updating and repairing Notepad, please report it through Feedback Hub by pressing Windows key + F, then choose Apps > Notepad so it can reach the relevant product team for investigation. Since this is a user-to-user forum, we can only share suggestions based on our findings and personal experiences, we cannot investigate the issue from the back end.
