Send a test message to your Outlook.com address from a different email account; if it arrives and you can reply successfully, basic sending and receiving are working.
Test your email
- From another account—or ask a trusted person—send a message with a distinctive subject such as Email test 7 November.
- In Outlook.com, check:
- Inbox
- The Other tab, if Focused Inbox is enabled
- Junk Email
- Select Filter → Sort → Date so the newest messages appear correctly.
- Open the test message and reply to it.
- Ask the sender to confirm that the reply arrived and that neither side received a delivery-failure message.
If the test message does not arrive
Check these Outlook.com settings in order:
- Storage: Ensure Microsoft cloud storage and mailbox storage are not full. A full account cannot send or receive email; messages sent while storage is full are returned to the sender and cannot be recovered.
- Junk Email: If the message is there, right-click it and select Mark as not junk.
- Inbox filters and Other: Remove any filter hiding messages and inspect the Other tab.
- Rules: Review inbox rules for actions that move or delete incoming messages.
- Forwarding: Check whether incoming mail is being forwarded elsewhere.
- Account access: If the password recently changed, update it wherever the account is connected. Unusual sign-in activity can also temporarily block an account.
These are Microsoft’s recommended checks for missing Outlook.com mail.^1^
If only one particular sender’s messages are missing, ask that sender whether they received a non-delivery report. If there is no visible error, Microsoft recommends that the sender use Sender Support in Outlook.com.^1^
If it still fails
In Outlook.com, select Help on the menu bar, describe the receiving problem, and complete the suggested troubleshooting. If unresolved, scroll to Still need help? and select Yes to contact Outlook.com support.^1^
