Verification

If this is a personal Microsoft account and the old phone number is no longer accessible:

1. Start signing in to the account.
2. At the Verify your identity prompt, select I don't have any of these.
3. Follow the prompts to replace the old security info with a new verification method.
4. After replacement, there is a 30-day wait before sign-in is allowed with the new security info.
5. If the old security info becomes available during that 30 days, it can still be used to sign in, but that cancels the pending update.

If access is still available through another verification method:

1. Go to the Microsoft account Security tab at https://account.microsoft.com/security.
2. Select Manage how I sign in.
3. Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
4. Add and confirm the new method.
5. Then remove the old phone number from the security info list.

Notes:

• Microsoft may temporarily stop sending codes if there were too many repeated requests or unusual activity.
• VOIP numbers can’t be used to receive verification codes; use a mobile phone number instead.
• Support agents can’t send verification codes or change account details.

If this is a work or school account:

• If another sign-in method still works, sign in to the Advanced security options page, add a new verification method, confirm it, then remove the old one.
• If all security info is unavailable, select I don't have any of these during sign-in and follow the replacement process. After that, there is a 30-day wait.
• If MFA is tied to a lost phone and sign-in is blocked, the organization’s IT help desk or another cloud services admin must reset the MFA settings so registration can be done again.
