Test the work account in Outlook on the web first; if web access works, clear the Windows/Office sign-in state and repair Outlook, but if web access also fails, your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator must check the account.
1. Determine whether the account or desktop app is failing
Open Outlook on the web and sign in with the same work or school account.
- If email opens in the browser: the account and mailbox are working; continue with the Windows desktop steps below.
- If the browser also rejects the sign-in: contact your workplace or school IT administrator. Ask them to check your account status, Exchange/Outlook license, MFA or Conditional Access requirements, and the failed sign-in record. Outlook support cannot reset an organizational account’s password.^1^
An administrator with at least the Reports Reader role can go to Microsoft Entra admin center → Entra ID → Monitoring & health → Sign-in logs, filter by your username and Status: Failure, and inspect the failure reason and sign-in error code.^2^
2. If webmail works, reset the desktop sign-in session
These instructions apply to Outlook on Windows:
- Open Word or Excel.
- Select File → Account → Sign out.
- Close Outlook and every other Microsoft 365 application.
- Open Control Panel → Credential Manager → Windows Credentials.
- Remove credentials associated with your work email, MicrosoftOffice, Office, or ADAL.
- Restart Windows, open Outlook, and sign in again.
This is the case-specific sequence recommended for Outlook desktop error “Something went wrong [48v35]”.^3^
Do not disconnect Settings → Accounts → Access work or school unless IT confirms the device can safely be disconnected and re-enrolled; managed devices may depend on that connection for compliance.
3. Repair Microsoft 365
If error 48v35 remains:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps and Features on Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft 365, select the three dots, and choose Modify.
- Run Quick Repair first.
- If it does not resolve the error, repeat the steps and select Online Repair → Repair.
- Restart the computer and test Outlook.
Online Repair is more thorough and repairs the entire Office suite, not only Outlook.^4^
4. Run the Microsoft 365 sign-in troubleshooter
On Windows 10 or later:
- Open the Get Help app.
- Search for sign in to Microsoft Office.
- Run the Microsoft 365 sign-in troubleshooter and apply its recommendations.
Microsoft also provides a business Outlook troubleshooting flow that checks profile, mailbox connection, and licensing problems.^5^
5. If only classic Outlook still fails
Repair the Outlook profile:
- Open Outlook.
- Select File → Account Settings → Account Settings.
- On the Email tab, select the work account.
- Select Repair, complete the wizard, and restart Outlook.
The Repair option is not available for Outlook 2016 connected to an Exchange account.^6^
If the option is unavailable or repair fails, ask IT to review the Entra sign-in log before deleting profiles, disconnecting the organizational account, or reinstalling Office.
