The Installation ID is generated by Windows—not printed on the DVD or packaging—and you can display it by running SLUI 4.
Obtain the Installation ID and activate
- Press Windows logo key + R.
- Enter:
SLUI 4 - Select your country or region, then click Next.
- The Windows Activation window displays the Installation ID, normally divided into several numbered groups.
- Open Microsoft’s Product Activation Portal, complete the CAPTCHA, and sign in.
- Select Activate a Microsoft Product → Windows → Windows 7.
- Enter the Installation ID and submit it.
- The portal should return a Confirmation ID.
- Return to the Windows Activation window, enter that Confirmation ID, and select Activate Windows.
This is Microsoft’s documented Windows 7 offline-activation procedure; Microsoft now directs users to the activation portal rather than the telephone number displayed by older activation screens.^1^
Command-line alternative
If SLUI 4 does not display the ID:
- Open Start, type
cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator. - Generate the Installation ID:
SLMGR.VBS /dti - Submit that ID through the Product Activation Portal.
- After receiving the Confirmation ID, enter it without hyphens or spaces:
SLMGR.VBS /atp YOUR_CONFIRMATION_ID SLMGR.VBS /dli
The last command displays the resulting license status.^1^
If the portal rejects the activation
- Record the complete error code and message; “not genuine” alone does not identify why activation failed.
- Check Control Panel → System and Security → System and ensure the installed Windows 7 edition exactly matches the licensed edition printed with the original copy—for example, Home Premium versus Professional. Microsoft identifies installing a different Windows version during a rebuild as a possible activation failure.^2^
- If the edition matches but the portal will not issue a Confirmation ID, use the support options presented by the Product Activation Portal and request a manual license review. Keep the DVD packaging and product-key label available as proof of purchase.
Windows 7 support ended on January 14, 2020, although Microsoft still publishes this activation process.^3^ Because the computer must remain on Windows 7 for legacy applications, keep it isolated from untrusted networks where practical.
