Surface Laptop for Business 7th Edition unexpectedly reboots during Modern Standby

I have a Surface Laptop for Business 7th Edition with Intel running Windows 11.

The laptop periodically reboots by itself, usually when I am not actively using it.

This normally happens while the computer is sleeping or when the lid is closed. For example, I can close the lid, carry the laptop to another location, open it again and discover that Windows has rebooted. The same thing can happen overnight while the laptop is left in sleep mode.

My normal power configuration uses Sleep for lid close and for the power button.

The machine uses Modern Standby:

Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) Network Connected

Traditional S3 sleep is not available.

The important part is that the Windows event logs show actual reboot requests generated while the machine is in Modern Standby.

Example from 15 September 2026:

Kernel-Power Event 506 The system is entering Modern Standby

Then shortly afterwards:

Kernel-Power Event 109 The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition.

Action: Power Action Reboot Reason: Kernel API

followed by:

Kernel-Power Event 577 The system has prepared for a system initiated reboot from Modern Standby.

This happened repeatedly within the same night.

There are also other reboot sequences on other days where Event 109 shows:

Action: Power Action Reboot Reason: Kernel API

Sometimes the reboot happens while Windows reports the system as being in Modern Standby, and sometimes shortly after a standby transition.

There is normally no visible BSOD and I do not find a useful minidump or MEMORY.DMP afterwards.

This makes the issue difficult to diagnose from the user side because Windows itself appears to be initiating the reboot.

Please investigate what component, driver, firmware or Windows power-management mechanism is requesting these Kernel API reboots during Modern Standby.

The problem is intermittent but occurs often enough that Sleep is not reliable for normal use of the laptop.04-Sleep-States.txt
