Additional settings-related features and issues within Microsoft Teams for business
To use a shorter address such as [Email], your organization must own that domain, add and verify it in Microsoft 365, and then assign it to your account; the original company.onmicrosoft.com domain cannot simply be edited or renamed.^1^
If you are the Microsoft 365 administrator
- Obtain the desired domain
- Your organization must own
companyname.com. - The word “Microsoft” cannot be removed from an
onmicrosoft.comaddress to createcompanyname.com; these are separate domains.
- Your organization must own
- Add the custom domain
- Open Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Go to Settings → Domains → Add domain.
- Enter
companyname.com, select Use this domain, and complete ownership verification. - Authorize the DNS records through your domain registrar, or add them manually if Domain Connect is unavailable.^2^
- Assign the new address to your user
- Go to Users → Active users.
- Select your account.
- On Account, select Manage username and email.
- Choose the new domain in the Domains list and enter the desired username.
- Select Done.^3^
- Configure email, if required
- To send and receive email through the custom domain, the account needs an Exchange license.^4^
- Before changing the domain’s MX record, create Microsoft 365 users and mailboxes for everyone currently receiving mail at that domain. Updating the MX record sends all new email for the domain to Microsoft 365.^5^
If you are not an administrator
This cannot be changed from Teams or your personal profile. Ask your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator to:
- Add and verify
companyname.com. - Change your username and email domain under Users → Active users.
- Update the display name separately if the issue is only how your name appears in Teams.
The existing onmicrosoft.com domain remains in the tenant for background use, but you do not need to keep using it as your visible business email address.^1^
