A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
If OneDrive shows full before the expected quota, the most common causes are:
- The wrong account is signed in to OneDrive.
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar.
- Open Help & Settings > Settings > Account.
- Check which account is connected.
- If it is not the subscription account, select Unlink this PC, then sign in again with the Microsoft 365 account that has the storage benefit.
- The storage upgrade has not finished updating yet.
- Open the Microsoft account Services page and confirm the subscription is active.
- Then open OneDrive on the web and check the storage shown in the lower-left area or in Manage storage.
- If the subscription was recently renewed, accepted through sharing, or changed, storage updates can take time. One documented case says shared subscription storage may need about 2 hours after accepting the invitation before the new quota appears.
- Local disk space is being confused with cloud storage.
- A separate Disk full message can happen when the PC drive is low on space, even if cloud storage is available.
- Free local working space with Disk Clean-up or Storage Sense.
- In OneDrive, open Settings > Account > Choose folders and stop syncing folders not needed on the device.
- After sync completes, right-click files or folders and choose Clear space to make them online-only.
- Empty the PC Recycle Bin/Trash.
- OneDrive storage is actually being consumed by items that still count.
- Personal OneDrive storage includes OneDrive files, photos, and items in the Recycle Bin.
- Open Manage your OneDrive storage to review what is using space and empty the recycle bin.
- If a shared folder added to OneDrive is consuming quota, remove that shared folder from OneDrive.
- The OneDrive app needs to refresh its connection.
- Quit OneDrive from the taskbar icon.
- Reopen OneDrive from the Start menu.
- If needed, unlink and relink the PC as above.
What happens while over quota:
- Files become read-only.
- New uploads, edits, and sync stop.
- If the account stays over quota for three months, OneDrive can be frozen.
- After six months, files may be deleted and cannot be recovered.
If this is a personal Microsoft account and the web view also shows the wrong quota after confirming the correct account and waiting for the update window, use Contact Microsoft Support. If this is a work or school account, contact the organization IT admin because storage can also be limited by the organization quota.
