An Azure platform as a service offer that is used to deploy web and cloud applications.
Request an Azure for Students eligibility review through Microsoft Education Support, because academic verification succeeded but the separate offer-eligibility check rejected activation and no subscription was provisioned.
Submit the review request
- Open Contact Microsoft Education Support and use its available contact workflow rather than the Azure portal support blade: ^1^
- Select the closest option for Azure for Students, student eligibility, or subscription activation.
- State explicitly that:
- Academic verification completed successfully.
- Activation then returned “You’re not eligible for an Azure free account.”
- No subscription was created.
- The Azure support portal returns
AADSTS50020for the Microsoft Services tenant. - You need a backend eligibility/redemption review, including a check for a previous Azure for Students record associated with another Microsoft identity.
- Provide screenshots and session/correlation details only through the private support case, not in this public Q&A thread.
Suggested wording:
My academic status was successfully verified, but Azure for Students activation returned “You’re not eligible for an Azure free account,” and no subscription was created. Please review my Azure for Students offer eligibility and check whether a previous eligibility or redemption record is associated with any Microsoft identity using my information. I cannot open the normal Azure support workflow because it returns AADSTS50020 for the Microsoft Services tenant.
This kind of eligibility or previous-redemption record cannot be reviewed or changed from the Azure portal; it requires Microsoft’s backend support systems.^2^
Why verification did not activate the subscription
The “academic status successfully verified” message confirms only the academic-verification step. It does not confirm final approval for the $100 offer.
Azure for Students additionally requires the applicant to:
- Be at least 18.
- Be a full-time student.
- Attend an accredited, degree-granting two- or four-year institution.
- Verify through the institution’s email address.
- Not be applying based on a MOOC or other specified professional training.
- Have no other Azure for Students subscription under the one-subscription-per-eligible-customer restriction.^3^
The offer terms also state that activations are limited and available only while supplies last, and that other restrictions may apply.^4^
The error alone does not identify which additional check failed. Support must determine whether this involves institutional eligibility, enrollment classification, a prior redemption, or another offer restriction.
Ask the university administrator to verify the institution side
Contact the BYU-Pathway Microsoft 365 or IT administrator and ask them to confirm:
- Whether the institution and its Microsoft tenant are registered and verified as an academic institution.
- Whether your program is classified as full-time attendance at an accredited, degree-granting two- or four-year institution for this offer.
- Whether other students in the same program have recently activated Azure for Students.
- If the institutional status is correct, whether the administrator can open a Microsoft support ticket on your behalf.
For closely matching cases—successful registration followed by the same “not eligible” message—the accepted escalation is for the institution to verify its academic registration and, if confirmed, have its administrator raise a Microsoft support ticket.^5^
Meaning of AADSTS50020
AADSTS50020 is a tenant-access error, not proof that your academic verification failed. Microsoft documents that a personal Microsoft account can be connected to the Microsoft Services tenant by default, where it has no linked directory; that behavior is expected.^6^
Because you already tested a private window and both personal and university identities, repeating browser cleanup or account switching is unlikely to advance this case. Do not create a paid/free-trial Azure account merely to work around the support error—it would not correct the existing student-offer eligibility record.
Can it be manually reset?
There is no self-service reset for a rejected Azure for Students activation. Microsoft Support can investigate the eligibility/redemption record and determine whether it can be corrected, but successful academic verification does not guarantee that the offer will be approved.
If Education Support cannot accept the case directly, ask the university administrator to submit it. Include the exact error, timestamp, affected sign-in identity type, and session/correlation identifiers.
