Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Ask the Rotary Club’s Microsoft 365 administrator to require MFA re-registration for your account, then sign in again and register Microsoft Authenticator by scanning the new QR code.
What the club administrator must do
An administrator holding at least the Authentication Administrator role should:
- Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
- Go to Entra ID → Users.
- Select your Rotary Club user account.
- Select Authentication methods.
- Select Require re-register MFA and confirm.
This removes the registered Authenticator and other existing MFA methods from your account. At your next sign-in, Microsoft will prompt you to configure a new method.^1^
Then:
- Open Teams or the Microsoft 365 sign-in page and enter your club account and password.
- When prompted to secure the account, choose Microsoft Authenticator.
- Open Authenticator on the phone, select +, and choose Work or school account.
- Scan the QR code displayed during sign-in.
- Complete the test notification before closing the setup page.
Resetting your password alone is not the relevant fix unless the password is also unknown; the administrator needs to reset the MFA registration.
If another verification method appears
On the sign-in screen, select Sign in another way or Other verification options. If a previously registered phone, security key, or other usable method is offered, use it to sign in. Then open Security info and register Authenticator again. Users can manage their own methods there when they can still complete authentication.^1^
Finding the administrator
For a small organization, the administrator is commonly the person who purchased or originally configured the Microsoft 365 subscription, another club officer, or the club’s IT consultant. Ask whoever issued the Teams username and password if you are unsure.^2^
If you are the only administrator
If this account is the club’s only administrator account and no other administrator can perform the reset:
- Try any alternative verification method shown during sign-in.
- If none is available, contact Microsoft Support for Microsoft 365 business account recovery and explain that the tenant’s sole administrator has lost access to the registered MFA method.
- Be prepared to establish ownership of the organization and tenant. Microsoft Support must handle the recovery; another ordinary club member cannot reset an administrator’s authentication methods.
Microsoft’s account-access guidance directs a sole locked-out administrator to self-service recovery first and Microsoft Support when those options do not restore access.^3^
After access is restored, the club should maintain another appropriately protected administrator account so one lost phone does not lock everyone out. Microsoft recommends administrator redundancy and a separate privileged authentication administrator for lockout recovery.^4^
