Mistakenly removed authenticator app from signing to my Rotary Club's Teams account, now can't get back in.

How can I get past this issue? Not getting a code to authenticator on my phone.

    Hello @Roy Marsden

Based on your description, I understand that you accidentally removed your account from Microsoft Authenticator, and now when you try to sign in to Teams, you are still being asked to verify through Authenticator, but you are no longer receiving the code or sign-in request.

If the account was removed from Microsoft Authenticator, simply reinstalling the app or waiting for another notification may not resolve the issue. The authentication method may need to be registered again. For a work or school account, the available authentication methods are also controlled by your organization.

Please contact your organization's other IT administrator and ask them to reset your authentication method so that you can register Microsoft Authenticator again. The administrator can follow Microsoft's documentation here: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |…

If you are the only Global Administrator of your Microsoft 365 tenant and you have no other verification method available, you will need to contact Microsoft Support and explain that you are locked out of the tenant because you no longer have access to your MFA method. Ask for the case to be escalated to the Data Protection/Tenant Recovery team for assistance with regaining administrator access.

When a call is made to support, the first step is to provide an automated voice response from AI. Be careful, you won't be able to speak to a support representative if you don't respond appropriately here.

Contact Microsoft customer support | Microsoft Support

Here's an example of a response that actually led to a support representative. Please refer to it.

    Q. Can you tell me if you are calling as a home user who uses a product or service at home or a business user who uses it in your business to provide the best assistance?
    A.I am a business user.
    Q. Thank you. Can you give me the details of your inquiry?
    A. Login technical support.
    Q. First of all, can you tell me which products you are inquiring about today?
    A. Microsoft 365 business Standard。
    Q. Please wait a moment, I understand Microsoft 365. Are you calling about a new case or an existing one?
    A. New.
    Q. To receive phone support, your phone number must be associated with your Microsoft 365 admin profile. To do this, go to aka.ms/m365profile. Again, it aka.ms/m365profile . This can take 48 hours. In the meantime, you can go to aka.ms/m365profile and file a case online. If you prefer, you can also text the link to the phone number you are calling. What do you think?
    A. The phone number is already linked to the link.
    Q. Can you tell me about the products in your inquiry?
    A. Microsoft 365 Business Standard.
    Q. Are you a Global Administrator?
    A. That's right.
    Q. I'm sorry. I didn't understand. Are you a global administrator for your domain?
    A. Yes, I am a global administrator for the domain.
    Q. If you have any inquiries, you can contact a Microsoft representative. Are you sure?
    A. Yes. Please.
    Q. Yes, I understand. Please wait a moment.

Please note that this team is always overwhelmed, so you might need to wait for them to call you, this should take 3-10 working days.

In case the phone line is not supportive, you can consider directly submitting a support request as a helpful workaround:

Consider signing up for a trial subscription to create a new tenant. Visit Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365.

Once the new tenant is set up, you can access its admin center and submit a support ticket through Microsoft 365 admin center > Support > Help & Support to contact the Data Protection team regarding the previous tenant. Please remember to cancel the trial subscription after your issue is resolved, as this will help you avoid any accidental billing. I hope this helps point you in the right direction. If you have any updates or additional questions, feel free to reply back and I'll do my best to assist further.

Ask the Rotary Club’s Microsoft 365 administrator to require MFA re-registration for your account, then sign in again and register Microsoft Authenticator by scanning the new QR code.

What the club administrator must do

An administrator holding at least the Authentication Administrator role should:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
    2. Go to Entra ID → Users.
    3. Select your Rotary Club user account.
    4. Select Authentication methods.
    5. Select Require re-register MFA and confirm.

This removes the registered Authenticator and other existing MFA methods from your account. At your next sign-in, Microsoft will prompt you to configure a new method.^1^

    Then:

    1. Open Teams or the Microsoft 365 sign-in page and enter your club account and password.
    2. When prompted to secure the account, choose Microsoft Authenticator.
    3. Open Authenticator on the phone, select +, and choose Work or school account.
    4. Scan the QR code displayed during sign-in.
    5. Complete the test notification before closing the setup page.

Resetting your password alone is not the relevant fix unless the password is also unknown; the administrator needs to reset the MFA registration.

    If another verification method appears

On the sign-in screen, select Sign in another way or Other verification options. If a previously registered phone, security key, or other usable method is offered, use it to sign in. Then open Security info and register Authenticator again. Users can manage their own methods there when they can still complete authentication.^1^

    Finding the administrator

For a small organization, the administrator is commonly the person who purchased or originally configured the Microsoft 365 subscription, another club officer, or the club’s IT consultant. Ask whoever issued the Teams username and password if you are unsure.^2^

If you are the only administrator

If this account is the club’s only administrator account and no other administrator can perform the reset:

    1. Try any alternative verification method shown during sign-in.
    2. If none is available, contact Microsoft Support for Microsoft 365 business account recovery and explain that the tenant’s sole administrator has lost access to the registered MFA method.
    3. Be prepared to establish ownership of the organization and tenant. Microsoft Support must handle the recovery; another ordinary club member cannot reset an administrator’s authentication methods.

Microsoft’s account-access guidance directs a sole locked-out administrator to self-service recovery first and Microsoft Support when those options do not restore access.^3^

After access is restored, the club should maintain another appropriately protected administrator account so one lost phone does not lock everyone out. Microsoft recommends administrator redundancy and a separate privileged authentication administrator for lockout recovery.^4^
