Environment

  • Windows 11 Pro 25H2
  • Build 26220.7653
  • HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cs3xxx
  • Windows Insider Dev Channel (BranchName=Dev, Ring=External)
  • Windows activated and licensed (Retail channel)

Problem

The Windows Update page in Settings only shows:

"Something went wrong. Try to reopen Settings later."

The Windows Insider page is no longer accessible.

Running:

Plain Text

ms-settings:windowsupdate

or

Plain Text

ms-settings:windowsinsider

always opens the same Windows Update error page.

What is strange

Windows Update appears to work in the background:

  • WindowsUpdateClient successfully detects updates.
  • WindowsUpdate.log shows successful scans, downloads and installations.
  • Microsoft Store updates install normally.
  • Some updates have installed successfully.

So the update engine seems operational, but the Settings UI is broken.

Diagnostics already performed

Windows integrity

BAT

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Completed successfully.

BAT

sfc /scannow

No integrity violations found.

Windows Update services

Verified running:

Plain Text

wuauserv

BITS

UsoSvc

No Group Policies found under:

Plain Text

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

Windows Insider status

Registry confirms Insider enrollment:

Plain Text

BranchName = Dev

Ring = External

ContentType = Mainline

EnablePreviewBuilds = 1

I also changed:

Plain Text

UseSettingsExperience

from:

Plain Text

0

to:

Plain Text

1

and rebooted.

No change.

Settings app

Re-registered:

PowerShell

Get-AppxPackage immersivecontrolpanel -AllUsers |

ForEach-Object {

Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppxManifest.xml"

}

Completed without errors.

Package status:

Plain Text

windows.immersivecontrolpanel

Status : Ok

Microsoft.WindowsStore

Status : Ok

Event Viewer

Repeated events from:

Plain Text

ModernDeployment-Diagnostics-Provider

show:

Plain Text

Autopilot.dll

HRESULT 0x80070491

Also observed:

Plain Text

WindowsUpdateClient

Event ID 20

Error 0x8024200B

for a PowerShell update attempt.

WindowsUpdate.log findings

The generated WindowsUpdate.log indicates:

  • Successful scans
  • Successful downloads
  • Successful Microsoft Store updates
  • No obvious fatal Windows Update failures

Therefore the update service appears functional while the Settings UI remains broken.

Question

Has anyone seen this issue on Build 26220.7653 Dev Channel?

Could the repeated ModernDeployment / Autopilot.dll (0x80070491) events be related to the missing Windows Insider page and broken Windows Update Settings UI?

Any known fixes other than an in-place repair install?

Yo agregaría además 2 capturas:

  1. La pantalla de Windows Update con:

"Something went wrong. Try to reopen Settings later."

  1. La captura de:

BAT

reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability" /s

mostrando:

Plain Text

BranchName = Dev

Ring = External

UseSettingsExperience = 1

    Hi Roberto Rivas Lopez,

    Thanks for sharing the detailed diagnostics and screenshot. Since updates still scan and install in the background, this looks more like a Settings interface issue with this Insider build than a complete Windows Update failure.

    The Autopilot.dll 0x80070491 event may be separate, so I would not assume it caused the missing Windows Update and Insider pages.

    Did this start immediately after installing build 26220.7653 or did Settings continue working for a while? Is a newer Insider build being detected or installed in the background?

    One useful check is to test from a new local administrator account:

    1. Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
    2. Select Add account > I don’t have this person’s sign-in information > Add a user without a Microsoft account.
    3. Create a temporary account, then select it under Other users.
    4. Choose Change account type, set it to Administrator, and select OK.
    5. Sign out, sign in to the new account, and check Settings > Windows Update.
    6. Press Win + R, enter ms-settings:windowsinsider and check whether the Insider page opens.

    If both pages work there, the issue is probably limited to the original profile. If the same error appears, it is more likely system-wide or specific to this build.

    I would avoid making further changes to the WindowsSelfHost registry keys. If a newer build is available, let it install and test again. I would also report the issue through Feedback Hub, including the screenshot, build number and Event Viewer details.

    If a newer build does not fix it and the error also occurs in the new account, an in-place repair using compatible Insider installation media may be the next practical step.
