Hello Emma1-N,
Apologies for my delay getting back to you. I have worked through items 1, 2 and 3 above. I can report:
When I select Turn On is File History, the mouse pointer makes the button go darker, but when clicking on the button it goes dim/goes clear, then after a couple of seconds it reverts to its original state. There's no error message. In File Explorer, the USB drive shows up as (F:). It is formatted to NTFS.
- I made sure the File History needs are running. File History startup type was Manual (Trigger Start). I clicked Start and it's running. Windows Search was already running.
- Reset File History Configuration - I followed the steps to rename Configuration folder to Configuration_old [I realise now you said to rename to Configuration.old - sorry]. I tried reopening File History but Turn On still wouldn't work. (goes clear/white then reverts to original state).
- I then went through the Repair Windows System Files. I ran the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth This took about 1/2 hour to reach 100% - completed successfully. I then ran the sfc /scannow. When verification reached 100% I got message "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them"
I then restarted the PC and tried File History again. File History shows My Passport (F:), and with 1.81 TB free of 1.81 TB. But I still can't turn it on.
Perhaps I should tell you that I started having issues in September - it looked like there were large sections of the File History missing. I tried some remedies myself using CoPilot AI but I think it ended up that File History stopped working altogether - like where I am now. Microsoft Support accessed my PC remotely and reloaded Windows, after that the File History would run. However, I was aware that there were large areas of the history missing, so I thought it would be best to make a clean start. I couldn't find "a user manual" for File History (like- what to do if you want to start over) so I manually deleted the files on the MyPassport and reformatted it. You are allowed to swear and call me stupid.
I think I'm partly the cause of my own misfortunes, but hope you might still be prepared to try and help me out...
I can confirm that File Explorer does recognise the USB device, and can drag a file onto it and open that, I can drag the file back onto my desktop and open it.
As part of previously using AI to try and sort the problem out, I have gone into Device Manager and uninstalled My Passport (F:)
Once again, I'm sorry about the delay in getting back to you, and for probably having been an idiot. I don't necessarily use my PC every day, so please don't feel you have to respond straight away.
Thanks for your time
