A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Copilot may have moved from Word’s ribbon to the Copilot Dynamic Action Button in the lower-right corner of the document, so check that location before changing or reinstalling Office.^1^
1. Check the new Copilot location
- Open Word and create a new blank document.
- Look in the lower-right corner of the document for the floating Copilot button.
- Select it to open the Copilot pane.
- If you want it near the ribbon, right-click the button and select Move to ribbon, if that option appears.
Only Copilot’s entry point changed; its capabilities remain available through the chat pane.^1^
2. Confirm that the signed-in account has Word Copilot access
In Word, open File > Account and note the signed-in account. Confirm that this is the same account that owns the qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription.
For personal accounts, Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium can provide Copilot access, but only the subscription owner can use Copilot in the desktop apps. Family members sharing the subscription do not receive that desktop-app entitlement.^2^
For a work or school account:
- Sign in to Microsoft 365.
- Scroll to the account information at the bottom of the home page.
- Check the displayed Copilot label:
- Copilot Chat (Basic): no access inside Word.
- M365 Copilot (Basic): standard in-app access.
- M365 Copilot (Premium): full experience with priority access.^2^
3. Refresh the license
Since Microsoft 365 is already updated, skip another update check and refresh its license instead:
- In Word, select File > Account.
- Select Update License.
- Close all open Microsoft 365 applications.
- Restart Word, open a new document, and check the lower-right corner again.^3^
4. Enable the required privacy settings
- Go to Word > File > Account.
- Under Account Privacy, select Manage Settings.
- Turn on:
- Experiences that analyze your content
- All connected experiences
- Restart Word.
Disabling these connected experiences prevents Copilot from appearing in Word.^3^
If these settings are unavailable or locked, the device is probably organization-managed; the Microsoft 365 administrator must review the applicable privacy policy.
If Copilot is still absent
Run the Windows license diagnostic:
- Open the Windows Get Help app.
- Search for Copilot License Troubleshooter.
- Run the troubleshooter and apply any recommended corrections.
If Copilot appears but cannot connect, run Copilot connectivity troubleshooter instead; it checks for firewall rules and other connection blockers.^4^
