If the former work account was the only login linked to the Learn profile and is now inaccessible, Microsoft cannot manually recover the profile or transfer its certifications; access must first be restored through the former employer or another login already linked to that profile.^1^
What to do now
- Contact the former employer’s IT administrator and request temporary restoration of the old work account.
- Microsoft cannot recover work or school accounts.
- Ask only for enough access to sign in to Microsoft Learn and link the personal Microsoft account.^1^
- After access is restored, sign in with the old work account, then:
- Select the profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Under Account Management, select Add Login account.
- Sign in with the personal Microsoft account.
- If that personal account already has another Learn profile, adding it triggers a profile merge. The merge combines learning progress, credentials, and transcripts and cannot be undone.^2^
- Sign out and verify access independently:
- Open a private browser window.
- Sign in using only the personal account.
- Open the Learn profile and select Credentials → Certifications.
- Confirm that all certifications and transcript records appear.
- In Settings → Manage email preferences, change the contact email used for certification-renewal notices. The contact email controls notifications; it is not necessarily a login account.^2^
If another login is already linked
If the inaccessible profile has another valid personal, work, or school login, use that account to sign in and perform the Add Login account procedure above. A Learn profile remains accessible through any valid login already attached to it.^3^
Credentials Support
A support request can be submitted for Microsoft Certification issues, but Credentials Support cannot bypass authentication or restore/transfer the contents of a profile when no linked login remains accessible.^1^
To open a case:
- Open Credentials support.^4^
- Select the online support request.
- Set:
- Product family: Learning
- Product or Service: Microsoft Credentials
- Type of Support: Professional No Charge
- Preferred contact method: Email
- Provide the Learn username, if known, and explain that the former work login is inaccessible and whether any alternate login was previously linked.
Do not post email addresses, identity documents, account identifiers, or other personal information in this public Q&A thread. Credentials Support handles follow-up through the contact details entered in the private support request.
