Your one-time-purchase Office license does not require a Microsoft 365 subscription; first check whether Excel is merely hidden, then repair or reinstall the complete Office suite using the original license.
1. Identify the edition and search for Excel
- Open Word → File → Account (or About Word) and note the full product name, such as Office 2016 Home & Student.
- Select Start, type Excel, and check the search results.
- If Excel appears, open it, then right-click its icon and select Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar. Missing shortcuts can make installed applications appear to have been removed.^1^
2. If Excel is not found, repair Office
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps. On older Windows versions, use Settings → Apps → Apps & features or Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Find the Office product matching the name shown in Word.
- Select Modify or Change.
- Choose Online Repair if offered; otherwise choose Repair.
- Restart the Surface, search for Excel again, and open it.
Repair operates on the complete Office installation, rather than requiring another Excel purchase.^1^
3. If the Office suite is no longer installed
For Office 2016, 2019, or 2021 that was redeemed and associated with a Microsoft account:
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used when Office was originally installed or activated.
- Find the purchased Office edition and select Install.
- Run the downloaded installer and approve the Windows prompt.
- When installation finishes, open Excel. Accept the license terms and complete the Activation Wizard if it appears.^2^
If Office is absent, try every Microsoft account that might have been used when the Surface was set up. Do not buy another license until these accounts have been checked.
The cited reinstall procedure covers Office 2016–2021. If Word identifies an older edition such as Office 2013, the applicable installer and recovery method are not established by the current procedure; contact Microsoft Support with the exact product name and any proof of purchase.
If Office came preinstalled on the Surface
The Microsoft Store recovery procedure is specifically documented for Office 2021 and certain preinstalled products that activated without a product key or Microsoft account. If Word identifies Office 2021 and that description matches:
- Open Microsoft Store → Library → Apps.
- Turn off Show installed products only, or select All.
- Locate Office and select the cloud/download button.
- Follow the installation prompts.^3^
Do not assume this Store procedure applies to an older bundled edition. If nothing appears in the Store library, contact Microsoft Support for the Surface/Office recovery method and provide the Surface serial number and purchase documentation if available.
If installation still fails
For Office 2016, 2019, or 2021 on Windows 10 or later, Microsoft provides an uninstall troubleshooter. This removes the existing Office installation, so use it only after confirming that the license or installer is recoverable from the account:
- Run the Office uninstall troubleshooter.
- Restart when prompted.
- Reinstall Office from the original Microsoft account.^4^
If the purchased product is missing from every candidate account, or activation fails after reinstalling, contact official Microsoft Support for Office activation/account assistance. Have the product name, purchase receipt, original product-key card if retained, and Microsoft accounts tried available.
Security note: Office 2016 and Office 2019 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. A valid license may still activate, but those editions no longer receive security updates.^2^
