I recall being able to check "read receipt" as a whole were every single email already had read receipt checked. I felt like that was under file, general options, but I am not able to find that option. Now I have the check read receipt for every email which is a nucence. Does anyone know how to have that already checked fro every email one creates?

    Good day Lisa,

The option you remember is available in Classic Outlook for Windows under File > Options > Mail > Tracking, where you can automatically request a read receipt for all outgoing emails.

In New Outlook for Windows, this setting isn't available. If you want a read receipt, you need to enable it for each email individually:

Open New Outlook > Select New mail > Compose your message.

Select Options > Choose Request a Read Receipt > Send the email.

If you would like read receipts to be requested automatically for all outgoing emails, you can switch back to Classic Outlook and configure the setting by following these steps:

Select the New Outlook toggle to switch back to Classic Outlook, or go to the Help tab and select Go back to Classic Outlook.

Select File > Options > Select Mail.

    Scroll to Tracking.

Check Read receipt confirming the recipient viewed the message.

Select OK to save the setting.

Please note that a read receipt depends on the recipient's email client and settings. The recipient can decline the request, and some email systems don't support read receipts.

Therefore, the available workaround is to use Classic Outlook for a global read receipt setting. In New Outlook, the option must be selected separately for each message.

Additional information is available in the following resource: Add and request read receipts and delivery notifications in Outlook | Microsoft Support

I completely understand how these limitations in New Outlook can feel disruptive. It’s not just about aesthetics; these differences can genuinely affect how smoothly you work and navigate your day.

As a forum user, I hope you understand that I don’t have the ability to modify or escalate product issues directly. However, I strongly recommend submitting your feedback through the Outlook (new) · Community. This is the most effective way to ensure your voice reaches the product team and can be considered for future improvements.

Once you've submitted your feedback, feel free to share the link here in the comments. I’ll be happy to upvote it to help bring more visibility.

Additionally, as other users have raised similar concerns and may not be aware of where to share their feedback, I hope this response helps clarify the situation and suggests a potential next step. Highlighting this information can make it more visible to others in the community who may be facing the same issue, making it easier for them to find guidance and contribute their feedback as well.

Thank you again for your time and for raising this important usability concern.

Yes. In classic Outlook, that setting is under File > Options > Mail > Tracking.

To have it enabled for every message:

    1. Open Outlook.
    2. Select File > Options > Mail.
    3. Scroll to Tracking.
    4. Select one or both of these options:
      • Delivery receipt confirming the message was delivered to the recipient's e-mail server
      • Read receipt confirming the recipient viewed the message
    5. Select OK.

If only read receipts are needed, enable just the Read receipt option.

    Important limitations:

    • A recipient can decline to send a read receipt.
    • Some email programs do not support read receipts.
    • If the message is read in the Reading Pane, a read receipt might not be sent.

If delivery/read notification emails are already arriving and need to be turned off later, return to the same Tracking section and clear those checkboxes.
