Outlook reading pane has vanished

I usually have Outlook Reading Pane set to the bottom. Yesterday this was working, this morning it has vanished. I can change the settings so it appears on the right, but I can't work with that. I've tried closing Outlook and opening again and setting the different display settings and going back to setting it to the bottom - nothing works.

    Hi N Wilson.

I understand how disruptive this is when the bottom Reading Pane is part of your usual workflow.

As the forum’s AI recommended, View > Layout > Reading Pane > Show on the bottom is the correct setting for new Outlook. Microsoft documents it in the Reading Pane guide. However, please skip Outlook.exe /resetnavpane: that command applies to classic Outlook.

Since you have already changed the layout and restarted Outlook, I suggest checking whether the same issue occurs in the browser:

    1. Sign in to Outlook on the web with the same work account.
    2. Open Settings > Mail > Layout > Reading pane and select Bottom. Save if prompted, then select an email.
    3. Check whether its contents appear below the message list. If this works, you can use the browser temporarily with your preferred layout.

This comparison will help narrow down whether the problem is limited to the Windows app. Microsoft also documents the web layout settings here.

If the bottom pane works on the web but remains missing in the app, try repairing the app. On Windows 11, close Outlook, then go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > find Outlook (new) > … > Advanced options > Repair, if available. Reopen Outlook and test again. This is a general troubleshooting step; see Microsoft’s repair instructions.

Could you let me know whether the bottom pane works on the web and whether the issue affects all mail folders or only your Inbox?

For new Outlook for Windows, set the Reading Pane from the View tab:

    1. Open View.
    2. In Layout, select Reading Pane.
    3. Select Show on the bottom.

If Show on the bottom still does not stay available, reset the Outlook navigation pane because pane customizations can interfere with the Outlook window layout.

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. Press Windows key + R.
    3. In Open, type: Outlook.exe /resetnavpane
    4. Select OK.
    5. Reopen Outlook, then go back to View > Layout > Reading Pane > Show on the bottom.

Note: /resetnavpane removes all customizations to the navigation pane.
