Using New Outlook on Windows for professional communication and productivity
Hi N Wilson.
I understand how disruptive this is when the bottom Reading Pane is part of your usual workflow.
As the forum’s AI recommended, View > Layout > Reading Pane > Show on the bottom is the correct setting for new Outlook. Microsoft documents it in the Reading Pane guide. However, please skip Outlook.exe /resetnavpane: that command applies to classic Outlook.
Since you have already changed the layout and restarted Outlook, I suggest checking whether the same issue occurs in the browser:
- Sign in to Outlook on the web with the same work account.
- Open Settings > Mail > Layout > Reading pane and select Bottom. Save if prompted, then select an email.
- Check whether its contents appear below the message list. If this works, you can use the browser temporarily with your preferred layout.
This comparison will help narrow down whether the problem is limited to the Windows app. Microsoft also documents the web layout settings here.
If the bottom pane works on the web but remains missing in the app, try repairing the app. On Windows 11, close Outlook, then go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > find Outlook (new) > … > Advanced options > Repair, if available. Reopen Outlook and test again. This is a general troubleshooting step; see Microsoft’s repair instructions.
Could you let me know whether the bottom pane works on the web and whether the issue affects all mail folders or only your Inbox?
