I cannot update windows due to lack of space. Supposedly there is supposed to be a tab called "fix it" that would allow me o use a USB drive to temp hold the files. Can't find it

    Hi,

If you would like to make a suggestion, I recommend using the Feedback Hub to propose this option to Microsoft:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/send-feedback-to-microsoft-with-the-feedback-hub-app

In addition to the Q&A steps, you can run Disk Cleanup: search for it in the search bar, select the option to clean up system files, check all boxes except "Downloads," and click OK.

After running Disk Cleanup, you can use TreeSize to identify the size of folders and files so you can see what is taking up space and free it up.

If Windows detects that there is not enough free space for the update, the option is called Fix issues in Windows Update. It appears only when Windows determines additional space is required.

    Try this path:

    1. Connect a USB drive with at least 10 GB of free space.
    2. Back up any important files on that USB drive first.
    3. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
      • On some systems, the path is Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    4. If Windows has detected a storage problem, look for Fix issues on the Windows Update page.
    5. Select Fix issues. This starts the tool that lets Windows use the external storage device temporarily.
    6. Select the USB drive from the drop-down list.
    7. Select Next and follow the prompts to complete the update.

    Important details:

    • Even when using external storage, Windows may still require some additional free space on the internal drive.
    • If the option does not appear, Windows has not exposed that workflow for the current update session.
    • Typical free-space needs vary: feature updates usually require 6 GB to 11 GB or more, and quality updates usually require 2 GB to 3 GB or more.
    • For upgrades, Windows troubleshooting guidance also states the device should have at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit OS or 20 GB for a 64-bit OS. If the device has a small drive, a USB drive may be needed to update it.

If Fix issues still does not appear, free additional space and try again:

    1. Open Start > Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations.
    2. Remove suggested items, then select Clean up.
    3. Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates again.

    Why extra space is needed:

    • Windows needs space to download the update, apply it, download updated optional features and languages already installed, and keep temporary rollback files for about 10 days after the update.
