My hdmi port will not connect to my monitor. The laptop has an HDMI port but when plugged in will not recognize any device or connect to the external device.

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

Please share a screenshot of the display adapters in Device Manager.

    1. Open "Device Manager" (Windows + X and select Device Manager);
    2. Expand "Display adapters" and take a screenshot.

Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Also, share a screenshot of your system information.

    • Press "Windows + R", type msinfo32 and press Enter.

Maximize the window and use the screenshot tool.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Try this in order:

    1. Press Windows logo key + P and make sure Extend is selected.
    2. Disconnect all accessories from the laptop, including docks, dongles, and adapters, then connect the monitor directly if possible.
    3. Check that the HDMI cable is fully seated on both ends.
    4. Try a different HDMI cable. If the new cable works, the original cable is faulty.
    5. Make sure the monitor is turned on and its input source is set to the correct port, such as HDMI.
    6. Test the monitor with another system, or test the laptop with another monitor, to isolate whether the issue is with the laptop, monitor, or cable.
    7. Check for Windows updates: open Settings > Windows Update and install any available updates.
    8. Restart the laptop. If the problem started suddenly after it was previously working, try Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver.
    9. If the issue started after an update, try rolling back the display driver:
      • Open Device Manager
      • Expand Display adapters
      • Right-click the display adapter > Properties > Driver tab > Roll Back Driver
    10. If rollback is not available, reinstall the display driver. Note: this can temporarily affect display output until the driver is reinstalled.
    • Open Device Manager
    • Expand Display adapters
    • Right-click the adapter > Uninstall device > select Attempt to remove the driver for this device > Uninstall
    • Restart if prompted
    • Open Device Manager again
    • Right-click the display adapter > Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software

If one external monitor still does not work, but other monitors do, the issue is likely the monitor, cable, or input setting. If no external monitor works on the laptop HDMI port after these steps, the display driver or laptop hardware is the most likely cause.
