w7 showing as counterfeit

Hello MS ,

i have an archaic laptop , a travelmate7730 , into which i have inserted a hard drive from an even old acer laptop , where the motherboard shuffled off its mortal coil ,making the swap necessary .

all seems to work well , however, the home screen is stuck on black black its all black , and every now and then a helpful window pops up to tell me the w7 must be validated as genuine , ,an even more stroppy message is etched onto the bottom right hand corner of the screen telling me 'this copy of windows is not genuine ' ! (there actually isn't an exclamation mark , i have put that there to denote my subconscious reaction to said message of doom)

this hard drive is the original one , and so has the original w7 ,delicately fitted to the HD when the laptop was new , back in 1901 or whenever it was . i did check . and there's no port for shovelling coal into the laptop ,, so its newer than the stream age at least .

Now , since i know the W7 version is a genuine one , i do realise i have grounds to take Ms to course and mulct them for a few billion dollars for slander , however , since my yacht is quite big enough already , and the gardeners are doing a fine job on the estate , i wonder if you could simply tell me how to fix this ,so i can go back to me baize green screen of calm .

(please note , all the above re wealth is a total fantasy , and the complete opposite is true , however , i am time rich and layered in coruscating shades of zen patience)

thank you for energising the microsoft elite coding geniuses to solve this piffling problem .

regards

robert burnett esq.

    Hello,

This happened because of the way that licenses work on Windows 7.

You most likely had a license that was embedded in the motherboard of your Travelmate laptop. That license is only valid on said laptop, and not others. Because Windows can't use the old license on the laptop that you put the hard into, you get the issue with the non-genuine copy of Windows.

With this being said, the other laptop should also have an embedded license in the motherboard. If there was an activated installation of Windows before, and you try to use that license with the new hard drive, you will also encounter this error because more than one device is trying to use it.

Your best bet would be to put the old hard drive back in the laptop (the one that came with the Acer laptop), deactivate Windows, swap out the hard drives, and see if it allows you to activate. You may run into issues with activating Windows 7 as it went out of support; but I can't vouch that you will have issues, either.

    I hope this information helps.
