For Windows 10, check these in order:
- Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
- Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone.
- Turn on Allow desktop apps to access your microphone.
- If the site is opened in a browser, allow microphone access in the browser too.
- In Microsoft Edge or Chrome, select the lock icon in the address bar and set Microphone to Allow.
- Make sure the correct microphone is selected in Windows.
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the microphone in Choose your input device.
- Speak and check Test your microphone to confirm Windows is receiving sound.
- Check the physical device.
- If using a headset, make sure it is connected correctly.
- If it has a Mute button, make sure mute is off.
- If it is Bluetooth, confirm it is paired and connected.
- Run the Windows recording troubleshooter.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Run Recording Audio.
- If Windows still does not detect the microphone, reinstall the audio driver.
- Right-click Start > Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device > Uninstall device.
- Check Delete the driver software for this device if shown, then select Uninstall.
- Restart the PC.
- If needed, return to Device Manager, right-click Sound, video and game controllers, and select Scan for hardware changes.
- Then right-click the audio driver and select Update driver.
If the microphone is built into a camera, also check Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera and make sure camera access is on.
