    Hi Tamiaus Nalls,

Thanks for confirming that you changed the boot order and created the recovery drive. Have you completed all the steps in the AI Answer above? If so, please let me know how it went and what happens when you try to boot from the USB. Does the Surface return to Windows, remain on the Surface logo, reopen UEFI or display an error?

Also, does USB Storage appear under Surface UEFI > Boot configuration? If it appears, try swiping left on USB Storage to start a one-time boot.

If that does not work, test with a different USB drive. If you are using a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter, try another adapter or connect a USB-C flash drive directly. You can also check whether the recovery drive is detected normally on another computer.

If the Surface cannot detect two correctly prepared recovery drives through different connections, the next step would be to contact Surface Support for further assessment.

For a Surface Pro X, use the Surface-specific recovery image and boot method.

    1. Disconnect all other USB devices from the Surface, including USB mouse, keyboard, and other storage devices. Surface can try to boot from those instead.
    2. Shut down the Surface completely.
    3. Insert the bootable USB recovery drive.
    4. Press and hold Volume Down.
    5. While holding Volume Down, press and release Power.
    6. Keep holding Volume Down until the Microsoft or Surface logo appears and spinning dots show.
    7. Follow the on-screen prompts.

If the USB still does not boot:

    1. Check that the USB was created from the correct Surface Recovery Image for that exact device model. Microsoft recommends the most recent recovery image.
    2. If Recover from a drive does not appear, ensure boot from USB is enabled in Surface BIOS and set the USB drive first in the boot order.
    3. Check the Secure Boot configuration. Newer Surface recovery images require a 2023 Secure Boot certificate.
    4. If Windows still starts, try booting through Windows instead: Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now > Use a device > USB Storage.

If the USB boots and the goal is to reinstall Windows:

    1. On the recovery screen, select Recover from a drive or Troubleshoot > Recover from a drive.
    2. If prompted for a recovery key, select Skip this drive.
    3. Choose Just remove my files or Fully clean the drive.
      • Fully clean the drive is more secure but takes much longer.
      • This reset deletes personal files, resets settings, and removes installed apps.
    4. Select Recover to start reinstalling.

Important: A reset returns the Surface to factory settings and removes personal files and installed apps. Have product keys and installation files ready for desktop apps that need to be reinstalled.
