The screenshot shows Windows 11, version 26H2 is being offered, but the install is failing with 0x800706be. A practical order to try is:
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Complete the prompts, then try Download & install again.
- Turn on early update delivery for 26H2
- Microsoft states 26H2 is rolling out in phases.
- On eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices, it is available for users who turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
- In Settings > Windows Update, switch that setting On, then check again.
- Use the Get Help app for Windows Update diagnostics
- The Windows Update troubleshooting guidance recommends starting with the automated troubleshooter in Get Help, which can run diagnostics and attempt fixes automatically.
- Repair Windows system files
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Wait for the success message, then run:
sfc /scannow - When the scan reaches 100%, close Command Prompt and try Windows Update again.
- Reset Windows Update components
- Warning: these are advanced command-line steps and require administrator permissions.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these one at a time:
net stop bits net stop wuauserv ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak net start bits net start wuauserv - Restart the PC, then try the update again.
- Check for software conflicts
- Third-party antivirus or security software can block updates. Temporarily uninstalling it, updating Windows, and then reinstalling it is a documented troubleshooting step.
- A clean restart of Windows can also help remove startup/software conflicts during update installation.
- If the issue continues, use Microsoft support tools
- Open the Get Help app from Windows for direct update help.
- If needed, report the problem through Feedback Hub.
Also note: Windows 11 version 26H2 is generally available, but the rollout is phased over the next few months, so availability can vary by device readiness.
