I replaced my motherboard on a pc that I purchased with Windows 10 preloaded. That was later upgraded to Windows 11.

I need to reactivate windows.

If your license was preinstalled on the device and came with the device, that means you are on OEM license, and it is not transferable.

If the license was purchased by you separately and it is a retail license, then you can transfer.

Replacing the motherboard is treated as a significant hardware change, so Windows may no longer find the license tied to the old hardware.

For Windows 11, try these steps:

    1. Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
    2. Select Troubleshoot.
    3. If the troubleshooter cannot fix it automatically, select the option to reactivate after a hardware change.
    4. Make sure the device is signed in with the same Microsoft account that was linked to the digital license before the hardware change.
    5. If there is a 25-character product key, select Change product key in Settings > System > Activation and enter it.

    Important points for this scenario:

    • A Windows license is associated with device hardware, and replacing the motherboard can prevent activation.
    • If Windows came preinstalled on the PC and the motherboard was replaced, a new license may be required.
    • If the original manufacturer replaced the motherboard, the PC should reactivate automatically. If it does not, use the product key from the COA card if one was provided.
    • The installed edition must match the license. Check Settings > System > Activation or Settings > System > About and confirm the edition is the one licensed for the device.

If Windows 11 still does not activate after running the troubleshooter and entering a valid product key, contact Microsoft customer support.
