Why no drive letter?

I'm trying to access my Android phone with Windows. Something I find very perplexing is that the device shows up in the windows displayed by File Manager. However, there is no drive letter assigned to this particular device. Furthermore, when trying to access the device via any means other than File Manager the phone cannot be found in the corresponding list of devices. This makes it either unusable or very cumbersome.

I've been using Windows since it was first introduced last century and this seems to be very at odds with the basic concept of drive letters which fit lots of different scenarios.

There is a good chance that I've failed to do something necessary to set this up properly but could definitely use some help figuring out what I've done wrong or failed to do at all.

While the above does not answer the question it is consistent with my findings. Also after performing the suggested Windows setup for Mobile Devices and installing the Link to Windows App on my phone the capabilities are no different with respect to what I'm wanting to do. This basically amounts to things like allowing the several other File Management programs that I use to even see the files as well as as things like open or save files in programs used to process the corresponding file types.

-->Note: Don't know what's going on here but this was Intended as follow-up to what is referred to elsewhere as "AI answer". Also, there was no intention of duplicating it.

    Hi!

You are connecting your phone to Windows using a USB cable, right?

On some phone models, you need to grant Windows permission to access the files. It’s not just a matter of plugging it in; it depends on the specific phone. Windows has no control over this.

Usually, a notification appears on the phone when you connect the USB cable. Open the notification and select the file transfer option.

If you can't find it, open your phone's Settings and search for options related to USB.

Android phones accessed from Windows do not normally appear as a traditional drive with a drive letter. In current Windows, phone access in File Explorer is handled through the mobile device integration feature rather than as a standard local volume.

To use it in File Explorer, the supported setup is:

    1. Confirm the phone is an Android device running Android 11 or later.
    2. Confirm the phone has Link to Windows version 1.24072.258.0 or later.
    3. Confirm the PC is running Windows 11.
    4. On the PC, open Settings.
    5. Go to Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage Devices.
    6. If the phone is not paired, select Add Device and complete pairing.
    7. Turn on Show mobile device in File Explorer.

After that, the phone can appear in File Explorer and files can be browsed, copied, moved, renamed, or deleted wirelessly.

If the goal is USB file access instead, Android phones often default to charging only. On the phone, change the USB connection mode to File Transfer or MTP after connecting the cable. Also check Windows Settings > Bluetooth and Devices > AutoPlay.

If the phone appears in File Explorer but not elsewhere as a drive, that behavior is consistent with phone integration and does not indicate a missing drive-letter assignment.
