About seven years ago, I purchased a Windows 10 Home activation key along with a new PC (separately from the device itself). Since then, I replaced the motherboard, and everything was working fine. I replaced it again two days ago, and now I cannot activate Windows due to error 0xC004F211.

There's usually an unspoken rule about not transferring the license within 90 days of the last transfer.

This is to prevent users from using one license shared among different devices by frequently transferring back and forth.

If you have purchase proof, you will need to contact support, see if they would be willing to manually activate for you. Explain to them why you had to change motherboard again two days after the last one. Forum users like us cannot override this.

To get help, open the "Get Help" app on your computer (just search for it in the Start menu). or go to https://support.microsoft.com/contactus, Type "Billing" and press Enter. On the next screen, click "Contact support" at the bottom of the page, then choose "Windows" > "Manage my subscription". You’ll then see the option to chat with a Microsoft support agent who has access to your account to help review the issue.

Error 0xC004F211 means Windows detected a significant hardware change. A Windows license is associated with device hardware, and replacing the motherboard can prevent Windows from finding the matching license.

    Try this in order:

    1. Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
    2. Select Troubleshoot.
    3. If the troubleshooter cannot fix it, select the link to reactivate after a hardware change.
    4. This transfer path requires that the Windows license was linked to the same Microsoft account before the hardware change.

If there is a valid product key that was previously used on this device, enter it from:

    • Start > Settings > System > Activation > Change product key

If Windows came preinstalled on the device and the motherboard was replaced, a new license may be required.

If the troubleshooter does not resolve the issue, additional help is available through Microsoft customer support.
