For Windows 10 voice dictation issues, use this troubleshooting path:
- Check microphone access and conflicts.
- If dictation shows “We don’t have access to your microphone”, make sure no other application or webpage is using the microphone.
- Refresh the webpage or retry Dictate, then allow microphone access when prompted.
- Verify the microphone is detected and working.
- If there is a message such as “There is a problem with your microphone” or “We can’t detect your microphone”:
- Make sure the microphone is plugged in.
- Test the microphone to confirm it works.
- Check microphone settings in Control Panel.
- For Windows 10, also use How to set up and test microphones in Windows.
- If there is a message such as “There is a problem with your microphone” or “We can’t detect your microphone”:
- If dictation starts but cannot hear speech:
- Make sure the microphone is not muted.
- Adjust the microphone input level.
- Move to a quieter location.
- If using a built-in microphone, try a headset or external microphone.
- If words are missed or recognition is inaccurate:
- Use a fast and reliable internet connection.
- Reduce background noise.
- Speak more deliberately.
- Check whether the microphone quality needs to be upgraded.
- If the issue is specifically with Windows voice typing shortcut behavior:
- Confirm Windows supports the feature version in use.
- Turn on online speech recognition in Settings.
- Check Settings > Time & Language > Language & region and make sure the display language and speech language are supported and match.
- If Win + H does nothing, check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and make sure the dictation shortcut is enabled.
- If pressing Win + H only types h, test whether the Windows key opens Start. If it does not, update the keyboard driver in Device Manager and disable any keyboard remapping software.
- If the shortcut still does not work:
- A reported fix was to reinstall the regional English language pack and restart between uninstall and reinstall to reset keyboard settings.
