My speech to text was working and just recently stopped working. When I select the designated field, and proceed to use the speech to text option, the curser stops solid and there is no recognition, link established or action. I went through all the settings and still can't seem to get it to work. what's happening?

For Windows 10 voice typing that suddenly stops responding, check these items in order:

    1. Verify dictation is being started correctly.
      • Click in a text field.
      • Press Windows logo key + H.
      • In Windows 10, this opens the dictation toolbar.
      • Dictation requires an internet connection.
    2. Confirm the correct microphone is selected.
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound > Input.
      • Select the microphone intended for speaking.
      • If using an external microphone, make sure it is firmly connected.
    3. Check microphone permission.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
      • Make sure Microphone access is turned on.
      • If the issue is that speech to text shows no activity, this is one of the main causes listed for voice typing failures.
    4. If speech starts but no text appears:
      • Adjust the microphone input level.
      • Try a headset or external microphone instead of the built-in mic.
    5. If words are not recognized correctly:
      • Move to a quieter location.
      • Press Windows logo key + Spacebar and confirm the correct language is selected.
    6. If nothing happens when pressing Windows logo key + H:
      • Test whether the Windows key works by itself and opens the Start menu.
      • If it does not, the keyboard key may be disabled or overridden.

Since settings were already reviewed, the most likely causes from the supported guidance are: the wrong input device is selected, microphone access is off, the PC is offline, or the microphone/input level is not being detected.

    Hi Amos Moller,

Since the voice typing window appears but does not react to your speech, it may be worth checking whether the Windows speech components are still functioning correctly in the background.

Please try these additional quick checks:

1, Test the microphone outside of voice typing

    • Open Voice Recorder and make a short recording.
    • Play it back to confirm Windows is receiving audio normally.

    2, Restart Windows audio-related services

    • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Restart:
      • Windows Audio
      • Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

3, Run the Recording Audio Troubleshooter

    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
    • Run Recording Audio and apply any recommended fixes.

4, Test from a new local Windows account

    • Create a temporary local user account and try voice typing there.
    • If it works in the new profile, the issue may be related to the current user profile rather than the microphone itself.

I hope one of these checks helps identify where the issue is occurring. Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.
