I have an error message saying Your organization's administrator turned off the service required to use this feature. I am working in Excel. I have a Microsoft Family Plan. Can I change my plan so I am the administrator?

Hello Douglas,

You should not need to change your Microsoft 365 Family plan or become an administrator. Family subscriptions are managed through a personal Microsoft account, not through an organization’s admin center.

This message may appear if Excel is still detecting an old work or school account. In Excel, select File > Account, sign out of every account, close all Office apps, then reopen Excel and sign in only with the personal Microsoft account that owns or receives the Family subscription.

Also check Windows Settings > Accounts > Access work or school. If an old organization account is listed and you no longer use it, disconnect it.

Finally, return to Excel > File > Account and select Update License, then restart Excel. Also install any available Office updates.

If the issue continues, open Credential Manager > Windows Credentials and remove entries related to Microsoft Office, such as credentials containing Office16. Restart the computer, reopen Excel, and sign in only with the personal Microsoft account associated with the Microsoft 365 Family subscription.

As a temporary workaround, test Excel for the web while troubleshooting the desktop app.

For a Microsoft 365 Family plan, this message is commonly caused by Office connected experiences being turned off, not by needing to change plans or make an admin change.

Try this in Excel:

  1. Open Excel.
  2. Go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
  3. Turn on optional connected experiences.
  4. Close all Office apps and reopen Excel.

A similar path that may appear in some Office apps is:

  1. File > Options > General.
  2. Select Privacy Settings.
  3. Enable Enable optional connected experiences.
  4. Restart the app.

If optional connected experiences are already enabled, the accepted guidance in similar cases is to check whether any of these were changed recently:

  • Local Group Policy changes
  • Privacy-hardening tools
  • Firewall or DNS filtering rules that block Microsoft services

If needed, run an Office repair:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select Microsoft Office > Modify.
  3. Try Quick Repair first.
  4. If the issue continues, try Online Repair.

Changing the Microsoft 365 Family plan is not indicated as the fix for this error in the available guidance.
