OneNote Android app disconnecting and crashing

I use OneNote mobile and desktop everyday for my work, and for a few weeks now, the Android app has been disconnecting and failing to sync, requiring me to go through the authentication process to get it working again. I have already cleared the cache, uninstalled the app, and downloaded the latest version from Google Play (16.0.20430.20038). I am always connected to the same Wi-Fi network, which is working normally. And recently the app started to crash, and oftentimes it is not responding at all. It used to work flawless, but now it is really impossible to use the mobile app. The desktop version is OK. Could you please help me resolve this issue and fix the app bug?

I am using Samsung Galaxy S23+, Android v. 16, One UI 8.5

Many Thanks!

    Dear @ALBERT ROSEN

Thank you for the detailed information. Since you have already reinstalled OneNote and confirmed that your Wi-Fi connection is working normally, I’d like to narrow down whether the issue is related to a specific notebook/account or to the Android app itself.

    Could you please confirm:

    • Does OneNote crash with any notebook, or only when opening/syncing a specific notebook?
    • Does the issue occur with all Microsoft accounts signed in to OneNote, or only one account?
    • When the app disconnects, do you see any specific error message or sync error code?
    • Does the same issue occur when using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi?
    • Approximately when did the crashing/non-responsive behavior start, and did it begin after a OneNote or Android/One UI update?

If possible, please also let me know whether other users on your organization’s Microsoft 365 account are experiencing the same issue. This will help determine whether we should focus on the device/app or the account/service side.

For this Android OneNote scenario, the supported steps are:

    1. Do not keep reinstalling or resetting the app if the main symptom is sign-in/offline behavior. A recent OneNote for Android issue was identified on the service side, and the recommended action was to restart the app while the backend fix rolls out.
    2. Force a sync manually:
      • In OneNote, find the notebook with the sync issue.
      • If a yellow Saved offline (error) bar appears, tap it to refresh.
      • If the notebook is read-only and shows Tap here to Sync, tap Refresh Now.
    3. Sign out and sign back in to reset credentials:
      • Open OneNote.
      • Tap Notebooks at the bottom left.
      • Tap the three dots in the upper-right corner > Settings > Account.
      • Tap Sign Out > OK.
      • Close OneNote from recent apps by swiping it away.
      • Start OneNote again and sign in.
    4. Confirm the app is fully updated from Google Play. For Android sync issues, updating to the latest version is a documented step.
    5. Keep OneNote in the foreground while testing sync. This is specifically recommended for avoiding mobile sync issues.
    6. If the notebook cannot be opened in OneNote for the web, treat it as a server-side issue. If the notebook is on OneDrive, check the service status page. If it is on SharePoint, contact the administrator.
    7. For the crashing symptom after a Samsung/Android update, a Microsoft Q&A accepted answer suggests these additional app-level checks:
      • Go to Settings > Apps > OneNote > Storage and clear cache and data.
      • Update OneNote and Android System WebView in Google Play.
      • If crashing continues, uninstall the Play Store version and reinstall OneNote from the Samsung Galaxy Store.

Given that cache clearing, reinstall, latest Play Store build, and stable Wi‑Fi were already tried, the most relevant next steps are:

    • Sign out/in using the in-app Account path to reset credentials.
    • Fully close and restart the app instead of repeating uninstall/reset cycles.
    • Update Android System WebView.
    • Try the Samsung Galaxy Store build if the Play Store build continues crashing on the Galaxy S23+ after the Android 16 / One UI 8.5 update.

If the app still disconnects but desktop sync remains normal, that aligns with an Android app-specific issue rather than a notebook or account-wide sync failure.
