Hi @barbara
I understand why this is upsetting. After using Windows 7 for eleven years, suddenly moving to a system that looks and behaves differently can be overwhelming, especially when consistency and familiarity are important to you.
Unfortunately, Windows 7 support ended on January 14, 2020. Microsoft no longer provides regular security or software updates for it, so continuing to use it online can leave the computer vulnerable. Newer versions of Microsoft 365 and Office are also no longer supported on Windows 7, which may explain some of the performance or reliability problems you experienced with Word.
That does not mean you must accept every new Windows 11 feature or change. Windows 11 can be simplified and adjusted, including the Start menu, taskbar, text size, colors, contrast, notifications, and focus settings. Microsoft also provides accessibility options intended to support focus and neurodiversity.
Regarding the missing names such as Downloads and Documents, please do not delete or move anything else for now. First check whether the left navigation pane in File Explorer has simply been hidden or made too narrow. If the folders themselves or your photos are missing, explain exactly where you were viewing them and whether they are still in the Recycle Bin, so the next steps can focus on protecting and recovering your files.
You may not be able to make Windows 11 identical to Windows 7, but it should be possible to reduce the visual changes and create a more stable, familiar layout.
I hope this helps
