If Preview pane is missing in File Explorer, the most likely cause is that the Navigation pane is hidden or a policy is preventing the pane from being shown.
Try these steps:
- Open Start > File Explorer.
- Select View on the command bar.
- Select Show.
- Check whether Navigation pane is turned on.
If the left navigation pane was hidden, turning it back on restores the normal File Explorer layout.
If the Preview pane still does not appear under View > Show, a Windows policy may be affecting it. A policy named NoPreviewPane can prevent toggling the Preview pane because the Details pane and Preview pane cannot be displayed at the same time.
If the option appears later but previews still do not work:
- Open File Explorer.
- Open Options.
- Go to the View tab.
- Under Advanced settings, make sure Show preview handlers in preview pane is selected.
If using Windows 11 and the option is available, the normal path to enable it is:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select View.
- Select Preview pane.
