A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
If the OneDrive Recycle Bin was emptied, recovery depends on the account type and whether the files were synced locally.
- If the files were in a synced Desktop folder on Windows or Mac: check the local Recycle Bin on Windows or Trash on Mac first. Restoring from there returns the files to their original folder.
- If the files were deleted from the cloud or were online-only files: they do not appear in the computer’s Recycle Bin/Trash. In that case, check the OneDrive website Recycle bin.
- For work or school OneDrive / SharePoint-backed storage: deleted items go first to the site Recycle Bin and then to the site collection Recycle Bin (second-stage). A site collection administrator can view and restore items from the second-stage Recycle Bin to their original locations.
- For personal OneDrive: the context only supports a single OneDrive Recycle Bin. Files deleted from that recycle bin cannot be restored after permanent deletion.
- Restore your OneDrive is available to Microsoft 365 subscribers and can roll back the entire OneDrive to a previous point within the last 30 days. This can help if the deletion happened recently. Be aware that files created after the chosen restore point are moved to the OneDrive Recycle Bin.
- If an item was permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle Bin, it cannot be recovered.
Recommended path:
- Open the Windows Recycle Bin and restore the Desktop files if they are there.
- If not, sign in to the OneDrive website and check Recycle bin.
- If this is a work or school account, contact the site collection administrator to check the second-stage Recycle Bin.
- If eligible, use Restore your OneDrive to roll back to a point before the deletion.
