Microsoft Store can't install Minecraft Dungeons II

Hi, I pre-ordered Minecraft Dungeons II yesterday and have been struggling to pre-install it even though the Microsoft store says it will work on my device and it is giving me the option to pre-install it.

When I click the pre-install button it says, "You're almost ready to play. To play games on your PC, we need to install some gaming components. You only need to do this once." Below this it says, "Couldn't install app, something happened on our end."

I have tried to change regions to US and restarting the Microsoft store install service which worked for somebody else, but it didn't work for me.

I'm out of ideas, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully, if anybody replies their suggestion will work because I spent $50 on a game I can't play.

    Hi Nathan P,

I understand why this is concerning, especially after paying for the pre-order and seeing that the Store considers your PC compatible.

The important part of the message is that Windows is failing while trying to install the required gaming components. At this point, I recommend that you review and try the steps provided in the AI generated answer on your thread. That reply typically include the most relevant checks for this scenario.

    Then please try the following:

    • Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates, then install all available updates, particularly any update for Gaming Services or the Xbox app.
    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Find Gaming Services, select the three dots next to it, and open Advanced options.
    • Select Repair first. If the same error remains, return to that page and select Reset.
    • Repeat the same Repair step for the Xbox app, restart the PC, and then try the pre-install again from the Xbox app instead of the Store page.

You can also check whether Gaming Services can be installed directly from its Microsoft Store page. If that page produces another error or an error code, please share the exact message, as it would help determine whether Gaming Services itself is the component failing.

Since this is a pre-order, the game will not become playable until its official release, but the gaming components and available pre-install files should still be able to install normally.

For reference, Microsoft also provides these official steps for troubleshooting game installations on Windows. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Since changing the region and restarting Microsoft Store Install Service already did not help, use this path next:

    1. Reset the Microsoft Store cache
      • Press Windows key + R.
      • Type wsreset.exe and select OK.
      • A blank Command Prompt window opens, then closes after about 10 seconds, and Microsoft Store opens automatically.
    2. Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
      • Select Windows Store apps > Run the troubleshooter.
    3. Make sure Windows is fully updated
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
      • Select Check for updates.
      • If updates are available, install them and restart the PC.
    4. Update Microsoft Store itself
      • Open Microsoft Store.
      • Select See more > Downloads and updates > Get updates.
      • Let any Store update finish.
    5. Sign out and sign back in to Microsoft Store
      • This is a recommended step in similar Store install failures and is relevant here because the purchase and pre-install are tied to the Microsoft account.
    6. Check common causes if the game still will not install
      • The app may not be available in the current country or region.
      • The app may no longer be available.
      • The app may not actually be compatible with the device, even if it appears in Store.
      • The PC may need a restart after recent Windows updates.
      • The PC may not be authorized to use Microsoft Store apps; sign in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase.
    7. If the issue continues, contact Microsoft Support
      • Use Contact Support from Microsoft support to route the case to the correct support option.
