A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
The main reasons this happens are usually one of these:
- Corrupted Excel preferences or settings.
- Background programs or add-ins interfering with Excel.
- Corrupted Office or Excel application files.
- A corrupted user profile.
- On Windows, file association or Office installation problems can also cause Excel to fail to open correctly.
A practical way to narrow it down on Windows is:
- Start Excel in Safe Mode to check whether add-ins are causing the crash. Safe mode bypasses Excel add-ins, most COM add-ins, changed toolbars, and other startup customizations.
- If Excel opens in Safe Mode, disable add-ins and test again.
- If Excel still fails, run an Office repair:
- Right-click Start > Installed apps or Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office > Modify.
- Try Quick Repair first.
- If the problem continues, run Online Repair. This is more thorough and can fix corrupted installation files.
- If double-clicking Excel files opens the wrong app or shows association errors, run Quick Repair from Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, then test again.
- If the issue is caused by another background program, a selective startup (clean boot) can help identify the conflicting process.
If the repair prompt appears every time and Excel closes immediately, the most likely causes are corrupted Office files or an add-in/startup conflict.
