Those startup virus notices may be either a real malware infection or fake security alerts.
- First, check whether McAfee is actually installed.
- Open Start and search for McAfee.
- If it is installed, open the real McAfee app directly and run a scan from the app, not from the popup.
- Run a malware scan with Microsoft Safety Scanner.
- Go to Microsoft Safety Scanner.
- Select Download Now and save it to the desktop.
- Open the downloaded scanner, accept the license terms, and continue.
- Choose Quick Scan and let it remove any malware it finds.
- If the alerts appear mainly while browsing, treat them as possible fake virus alerts or browser notifications.
- Fake alerts can try to scare users into fraudulent actions.
- In Microsoft Edge, check popup and notification permissions and remove suspicious allowed sites.
- If the computer is showing other infection symptoms, that strengthens the case for malware.
Common signs listed by Microsoft include:
- unusually slow performance
- frequent crashes or freezes
- inability to start antivirus or Task Manager
- inability to open security-related websites
- constant unexpected pop-ups
- If this is an older Windows 7 system and the alert mentions Blaster, install the relevant security updates if they were never applied. Microsoft states the computer was not vulnerable to the Blaster worm if security patch 823980 (MS03-026) had already been installed before the worm was discovered.
- If help is still needed after scanning, use Microsoft’s malware support resources.
