A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
If the account dashboard shows storage is OK, those warning emails by themselves do not mean files or email will be deleted. The first check is to verify the storage status directly in the Microsoft account, not from links inside the email.
- Open the Microsoft account dashboard and check the Microsoft storage section: Open account dashboard
- In Outlook.com, open Settings and search for Storage to check mailbox usage.
- If both show enough available space, treat those emails as suspicious and mark them as Junk or Phishing. Do not click links in the message, reply, or enter a password from the email.
Important storage facts:
- If Microsoft storage is exceeded, OneDrive cannot upload, edit, or sync new files, and Outlook.com email cannot be sent or received.
- After 6 months over the Microsoft storage quota, OneDrive and its files may be deleted.
- If OneDrive is over quota, existing files remain but are read-only until storage is reduced or more storage is added.
- If email is sent while the mailbox is over quota, incoming mail is returned to the sender and must be resent after storage is freed.
If the dashboard shows storage is actually full, the supported ways to resolve it are:
- Delete files and empty the OneDrive Recycle Bin.
- Remove unneeded Outlook.com items by checking Outlook storage.
- Buy more storage or add OneDrive storage if eligible.
- If additional storage was recently purchased, quota updates can take up to 24 hours, and if it still has not updated after 48 hours, contact support.
